What Does the IGNOU MBAMM Project Actually Require?

IGNOU MBAMM Project: synopsis goes to the Regional Director, bound report goes to the Registrar SED at IGNOU Delhi

IGNOU MBA (Marketing Management) project guide, checked September 2026

What the IGNOU MBAMM project asks for, from topic to bound report

The IGNOU MBAMM project is the eight-credit project course MMPP-001 that every MBA (Marketing Management) learner completes. It needs an approved synopsis on a marketing topic, an eligible guide, and a bound report of about 50 to 60 pages sent to IGNOU Delhi, and it is evaluated on the report itself.

Every rule below comes from four official documents: the MMPP-001 Project Guidelines, the MBA specialisation handbook (January 2026), the ignou.ac.in MBAMM programme page and the Common Prospectus July 2026. Where they disagree, this page says so.

What is the IGNOU MBAMM project?

The MBAMM project is the compulsory project course of the Master of Business Administration (Marketing Management) programme. Its course code is MMPP-001, the same code used by the other ODL MBA specialisations, but an MBAMM learner builds the study around a marketing problem.

The IGNOU MBAMM project is registered as MMPP-001, a single course worth eight credits that counts as two courses, with no study material supplied. The ignou.ac.in MBAMM programme page places it in Semester 3, beside MMPC-015 Research Methodology for Management Decisions. A learner first chooses a marketing topic, finds a guide who meets IGNOU’s eligibility rules, and sends a synopsis with the signed proforma and the guide’s bio-data to the Regional Director of the Regional Centre. Only after written approval does the actual study begin. The final report runs to about 50 to 60 double-spaced pages, not exceeding roughly 18,000 words, and goes in bound form to the Registrar (SED) at IGNOU, Maidan Garhi. According to the MBA specialisation handbook (January 2026), the project course is evaluated only on this report, and a C grade (50%) is needed to clear it. A viva is held only when the evaluator recommends one.

Sources: MMPP-001 Project Guidelines (SOMS, IGNOU); MBA specialisation Student Handbook and Prospectus, January 2026, Section 3.9; ignou.ac.in MBAMM programme page.

In practice, this means the Semester 3 fee is higher than the others for a reason. The handbook lists Rs 16,000 for Semesters 1, 2 and 4 and Rs 18,000 for Semester 3, and explains that Semester 3 carries the eight-credit project.

Which common claims about the MBAMM project are wrong?

Several figures circulate about this project that no official IGNOU document supports. The table sets each one beside what the official source actually says.

How do you know your topic counts as a marketing topic?

A topic counts as a marketing topic when its central question sits inside one of the areas the MBAMM specialisation papers teach. The official project guidelines ask for a topic preferably from the area of specialisation, and they accept three study types: a comprehensive case study of one organisation, an inter-organisational comparison, or a field study.

The ignou.ac.in MBAMM page tags each marketing paper by semester. Mapping a topic to one of these papers gives the synopsis a clear academic anchor.

Paper (semester on ignou.ac.in)What the course coversTopic territory it supports
MMPM-001 Consumer Behaviour (Sem 3)Perception, attitude, motivation, family and reference-group influencePurchase behaviour of a defined customer group
MMPM-002 Sales Management (Sem 3)Selling skills, sales force recruitment, motivation and controlSales force performance in one company
MMPM-003 Product and Brand Management (Sem 3)Product life cycle, new product launch, brand equity, positioningBrand awareness or positioning of one brand
MMPM-005 Marketing of Services (Sem 3)Service quality, the extended 7P mix, omni-channel serviceService quality in a bank, hospital or hotel
MMPM-004 International Marketing (Sem 4)Cross-border marketing decisionsExport marketing practice of a firm
MMPM-006 Marketing Research (Sem 4)Research for marketing decisionsAny survey-based marketing study
MMPM-007 Integrated Marketing Communication (Sem 4)Advertising campaigns, sales promotion, digital marketing, media planningEffectiveness of a campaign or digital channel
MMPM-008 Rural Marketing (Sem 4)Rural consumers and rural market structureBrand reach in a rural district
MMPM-009 Retail Management (Sem 4)Store location, merchandising, pricing, CRMStore choice or retail format preference

One timing detail matters here. The synopsis is prepared after the project course is registered in Semester 3, yet Marketing Research (MMPM-006) carries a Semester 4 tag on ignou.ac.in. Research-method support during the synopsis stage therefore comes from MMPC-015 Research Methodology for Management Decisions, the Semester 3 core course whose last block covers report writing and presentation.

For wider idea generation across all specialisations, see the guide on choosing an IGNOU MBA project topic. Theory preparation for the Semester 3 marketing papers is covered in the MBAMM 3rd semester books guide.

BK Sahni has guided 5,00,000 students till date, and among marketing learners the proposal that returns for reformulation usually names a whole industry in its title instead of one company, one city or one customer group.

Who can guide an MBAMM marketing project?

A guide can come from any of three routes named in the official project guidelines, and the guidelines use a marketing example to explain the professional route.

  • Management faculty of the School of Management Studies at IGNOU headquarters.
  • Approved academic counsellors of the Management Programme with relevant experience at study centres. Their bio-data does not need to be attached.
  • Management faculty with five years of PG teaching experience, or professionals holding a Master’s degree in management or an allied discipline with at least five years of experience in the relevant area. The guidelines state that for a marketing topic the supervisor should have five years of experience in marketing after the Master’s degree.

A guide may supervise no more than five learners at a time, and IGNOU pays the guide a token honorarium of Rs 500. A self-identified guide must sign a detailed bio-data covering degrees with specialisation, university, year and percentage, and work experience in date order. The general rules for every programme are explained in the IGNOU project guide eligibility guide.

What goes into the MBAMM synopsis and proforma?

The MBAMM synopsis must contain five parts: introduction, rationale, objectives, research methodology and the limitations of the proposed project. The guidelines call the objectives the most important part and ask for them to be written in neutral terms, without assuming the findings.

The methodology part should state the research design, the nature and source of data, the sample and sampling technique with the reason for choosing the organisation, the tools such as a questionnaire and their link to the objectives, and the statistical tools for analysis.

The “Proforma for Approval of Project Proposal (MMPP-001)” carries a field called Subject Area. The listed options include HRM and OB, Accounting and Finance, Operations Management and Information System, Marketing, and Corporate Management, so an MBAMM learner normally writes Marketing. The title entered here becomes final, because the guidelines state that the report must carry the title approved by the evaluator. A worked format for the whole document is on the IGNOU synopsis format page.

Where do the MBAMM synopsis and report go?

The synopsis and the report go to two different offices. ODL learners of MBA, MBAFM, MBAHM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF send the synopsis to the Regional Director of their own Regional Centre and the report to the Registrar (SED) in Delhi.

Regional Centre notices relaying an RSD notification of 22 September 2022 confirm that MMPP-001 synopses are submitted to and evaluated at the concerned Regional Centre. The official MMPP-001 Project Guidelines on ignou.ac.in also point learners to the Regional Centre e-mail directory, so it is worth confirming with the Regional Centre whether it accepts the proposal by e-mail or by post.

How long does each stage of the MBAMM project take?

The whole sequence is designed to fit inside the second year. The project guidelines ask learners to allow at least eight to nine months so that the report can be submitted before the fourth semester ends.

  1. Register MMPP-001 in Semester 3The proposal is sent only after this registration.
  2. Send the synopsis earlyA Regional Centre is not responsible for timely disposal of proposals received more than six months after registration.
  3. Receive the PP NoA complete proposal gets a unique Project Proposal number for all further contact.
  4. Wait for the written decisionApproval or non-approval is communicated within two to three months of receipt.
  5. Carry out the study and send the reportA PR No is allotted when the report reaches the Registrar (SED).

If the proposal is not approved, the revised version goes back with a fresh proforma, the rejected proposal bearing the evaluator’s comments, and the PP No. A change of guide is treated as a new proposal. The stage-by-stage picture for all MBA learners is on the MMPP-1 project phases page.

How is the MBAMM project report written and evaluated?

The MBAMM project report follows an eight-part structure set by the project guidelines: introduction with review of literature and organisation details; research methodology including the reliability and validity of tools; results and discussion in tables or graphs; summary and conclusion; recommendations; limitations and directions for further research; references; and annexures such as the questionnaire.

The bound volume must also contain a cover page with the learner’s name, enrolment number, guide’s name and title, a detailed table of contents with page numbers, the approved proposal with the approved proforma and guide bio-data bound in, and a Certificate of Originality signed and dated by both learner and guide. The guidelines state that a project with a stapled proposal will not be accepted, and a report missing these documents is returned for compliance.

Evaluation rests on the report alone, as the MBA specialisation handbook explains in Section 3.9. The letter grades convert as A for 80% and above, B for 60% to 79.9%, C for 50% to 59.9%, D for 40% to 49.9% and E below 40%, and an overall C is needed to pass the course. A project evaluation fee of Rs 500 is paid with the term-end examination form of the semester in which the report is submitted. The handbook also states that project reports cannot be re-evaluated, so the draft deserves a careful check before binding. The full MBA-wide report walkthrough is in the IGNOU MBA project report guide.

Where the official IGNOU documents disagree

  • Course count: the Common Prospectus July 2026 (Section 3.6) describes 20 core and 7 specialisation courses; the MBA specialisation handbook (Section 3.5) describes 19 core and 8. Both total 28 courses and 116 credits.
  • Medium: the Common Prospectus lists English and Hindi for MBAMM; the ignou.ac.in MBAMM page and the handbook list English.
  • Marketing papers: the ignou.ac.in page lists nine MMPM papers, including MMPM-008 Rural Marketing, while the PG Diploma in Marketing Management table in the Common Prospectus (Section 8.62) lists eight and omits MMPM-008. The handbook prints the MBAMM papers under the Semester 1 and 2 headings.

Confirm the exact paper list and medium with the Regional Centre before re-registration.

What IGNOU does not specify for the MBAMM project

  • A font, font size or margin size. The guidelines say only A4, typed, double-spaced.
  • A minimum sample size or number of respondents.
  • A permitted plagiarism percentage. The guidelines say the report must be free from plagiarism and that action follows University policy.
  • A referencing style or an abstract length.

Any figure quoted for these points is a convention, not an IGNOU rule; the guide’s advice should settle them.

Learners in other specialisations can follow the same process on the IGNOU MBAFM project page or the IGNOU MBAHM project page. For a question about a specific MBAMM synopsis, message BK Sahni’s team on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

Is work experience required for the IGNOU MBAMM project?

No. The Common Prospectus July 2026 sets MBAMM eligibility as a bachelor's degree of at least three years with 50% marks (45% for reserved categories), and the project guidelines add no work-experience condition for the project. Experience requirements in those guidelines apply to the guide, not to the learner.

Can the IGNOU MBAMM project be on digital marketing?

Yes, provided the study stays inside marketing. The official project guidelines ask for a topic preferably from the learner's area of specialisation, and the MBAMM paper MMPM-007 Integrated Marketing Communication covers digital marketing tools. Declare Marketing as the subject area on the proforma and choose a guide with marketing experience.

Is there a viva in the IGNOU MBAMM project?

Only if the evaluator recommends one. The MBA specialisation handbook (January 2026) states that the project course is evaluated only on the submitted project report, and the project guidelines say a learner may be asked to appear for a viva-voce when the evaluator so recommends.

How many words should the IGNOU MBAMM project report have?

The MMPP-001 guidelines suggest about 50 to 60 double-spaced typed pages, not exceeding approximately 18,000 words, excluding appendices and exhibits. The same guidelines permit rational variation on either side, so there is no fixed minimum word count.
