IGNOU MJML 023 Practical: How to Build Your MAJMC Digital Media Portfolio, Step by Step

IGNOU MJML 023 Practical guide for MAJMC showing the seven digital media portfolio activities in order

IGNOU MJML 023 Practical from start to finish

The whole job in brief

For the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical you write five story ideas, three drafts of 450 words or more and an 800-word backgrounder, make one infographic, upload a phone video of at least 3 minutes to YouTube, post from an X account opened with your enrolment number, review The Voices in 500 words, and submit by 30 June or 31 December.

This guide takes the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical (Practical: Digital Media) in the order the work is easiest to do, using the course manual applicable from January 2025. In the MAJMC first year, the July 2026 Common Prospectus places it beside MJML 220 and MJML 221 at 6 credits, and you take any two of those three; PGJMC learners face the same choice. The manual marks your contributions out of 100, with 40 as the minimum passing mark. Each step below names the manual’s own limit.

Ten weeks that end on 30 June or 31 December

The IGNOU MJML 023 Practical manual prints two last dates a year, 30 June for the June term-end exam and 31 December for the December term-end exam, and asks you to confirm the final dates with your Study Centre and Regional Centre. Ten weeks back from either date puts a comfortable start in the third week of April or of October.

Ten weeks to the portfolio

10Self-check, fee with the exam form, hand in, keep a copy

Fee: the July 2026 Common Prospectus sets Rs 500 for a practical examination of more than 4 credits, which covers the 6-credit MJML-023, paid with your term-end exam form.

In our records, between 70 and 80 percent of those who contact us only get started within the final month before a due date. For MJML-023 that month would have to hold a YouTube upload, eight X posts and written minimums that add up to more than 3,000 words.

A pattern we meet at our desk: the work is left so late that no time remains to do it properly yourself. In MJML-023 the squeeze falls hardest on Activity 5, which the manual asks you to record on your own mobile device.

Day one: accounts, folders and a link log

Three things set up the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical before a word is written. IGNOU’s MAJMC programme page expects learners to have computer and internet access.

  1. YouTube. Activity 5 goes to your own YouTube account. Sign in on the phone you will record with.
  2. X. Activity 6 asks you to create an X account with your enrolment number. Copy it from your IGNOU identity card into the username, and the display name too; follow your Study Centre if it wants a set pattern.
  3. Link log. Keep one sheet with activity, title, date and full URL, and copy every portfolio link from it.

Across practical courses, a wrong enrolment number or wrong programme details on the first page is one of the slips we see. In MJML-023 the number also has to sit inside the X account, because the manual asks you to create that account with it.

Writing the five MJML 023 story ideas

Activity 1 of the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical carries 25 marks, 5 per idea, and the manual caps it at five. Each idea runs to about 100 words, answers the 5Ws and 1H, names your news angle and identifies at least three sources.

  1. List ten events you can reach this month (ward, workplace, campus, market) and keep the five you can verify.
  2. Write one line each for who, what, when, where, why and how, then join them.
  3. Add the angle in one sentence: why this is news for a reader now.
  4. Name three or more sources by role: an official, a person affected, an expert or a document.

Worked story idea (illustrative)

Working title: Ward 14 queues for tanker water while a pipeline repair waits. Who: families in three lanes of Ward 14 and the municipal water department. What: homes have relied on tankers since the main line was dug up. When: since the first week of this month. Where: the lanes behind the market road. Why: the contractor awaits road-cutting permission. How: two tankers a day, filled by queue. Angle: who bears the cost of a delayed permission. Sources: the ward councillor, the department’s junior engineer, two residents’ association office-bearers.

The ward and the facts are invented to show the shape; your ideas must come from real events you can check.

Many learners draft with an AI tool before they have read the course document, and what comes out does not fit the brief. On MJML-023 the mismatch shows fast, since each idea is marked against a short brief: about 100 words, the 5Ws and 1H, an angle and three or more sources.

Choosing the subject is where many learners tell us they feel most lost, and many say no class ever showed them how to begin. The MJML-023 manual gives no topic list for its story ideas.

From one event to a 450-word inverted pyramid draft

Activity 2 of the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical asks for three news stories of at least 450 words, 10 marks each, in the inverted pyramid style, with at least five related external news links at the end. Because the manual bars claiming one part of the same story for two activities, report three events that are not among your five ideas.

Draft word budget, 450 words and up

PartWhat it carriesWords
LeadWho, what, when, where40 to 50
Second paragraphThe key detail and why it matters70 to 80
Facts and figuresNumbers, dates, documents110 to 120
VoicesTwo or three attributed quotes110 to 120
ContextWhat led to this80 to 100
Last detailsWhat happens next40 to 60

Under the story, a line such as “Related reports” lists the five or more links: publication, headline, date and the full URL of the article itself, never a home page.

In many files we read, the source list at the end does not match what the text actually draws on. For each MJML-023 draft the manual asks that the links be related to your story.

Word and link counter

Targets: idea about 100 words; draft 450 or more with five links; backgrounder 800 or more with 10 resource links; review about 500. Paste the story body and the link list separately.

The MJML 023 backgrounder story: 800 words from 10 resources

The backgrounder is the longest piece in the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical: at least 800 words, compiling data from a minimum of 10 resources, for 10 marks. It must have been relevant when you developed it, with the resource links at the bottom. One shape that works:

  • Now (about 100 words): the current development.
  • How it began (150 to 200): a timeline of key dates.
  • The numbers (150 to 200): attributed figures from reports or data.
  • Who is involved (about 150): the bodies and people, and where each stands.
  • What is still open (100 to 150): unresolved questions, next dates.
  • Resources: 10 or more links with title, publisher and date.

Mix official reports, earlier news reports, research papers and press releases, and date the draft.

Out-of-date sources are a weakness we keep finding in written work, and in our experience they cost marks. For this MJML-023 activity the manual asks that the story have been relevant at the time of its development.

IGNOU MJML 023 Practical infographic and news video, step by step

Activities 4 and 5 of the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical carry 5 and 10 marks, and the manual names no software for either.

Infographic from publicly available data

  1. Pick one question a reader would ask about a current story.
  2. Find one public dataset from a government, statistical or research publisher; note title, publisher and year.
  3. Choose three to five figures: bars to compare, a line for change over time.
  4. Add a headline, one explanatory line, the source line and your name, then export it as an image.

News video or audio story of 3 minutes or more

  1. Write points or a script that runs a little over 3 minutes when read aloud against a timer.
  2. Record on your own phone: steady, quiet, close to the speaker; test ten seconds first.
  3. Upload to your YouTube account with a clear title and your sources in the description.
  4. Check that YouTube shows 3:00 or more and that the link opens while signed out, then paste the full link into the portfolio.

An audio story also goes to YouTube, usually over a still image.

Posting on X and reviewing the School’s lab journal

Activities 6 and 7 of the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical, 10 marks each, test how you handle a platform and how you judge one.

Eight screenshots from your X account

You share your stories from the enrolment-number account and submit eight screenshots, judged on content writing and on posts or designs. The manual’s line says “points 4 to 11” though its table stops at activity 7, so confirm with your Study Centre which pieces to post. Write each post for X, then capture it with the handle, date and whole post visible.

A 500-word review of The Voices

The portal is www.medialit.in/thevoices, whose footer calls it the Lab Journal of SOJNMS, IGNOU. In November 2026 its sections included national, society, environment, agriculture and video features. Note the titles and dates of the stories you read.

MJML 023 portfolio format and page order

The IGNOU MJML 023 Practical manual asks for the activities compiled in a portfolio format and says nothing more on layout. This order reads cleanly:

  1. Front page: name, enrolment number, programme (MAJMC or PGJMC), course code and Study Centre code. The manual prints no cover fields; follow your Study Centre if it asks for more.
  2. Contents: the seven activities with page numbers, the YouTube link and your X handle.
  3. Activities 1 to 7 in the manual’s order, each draft followed by its links and the backgrounder by its resource list.

Print every link in full, since paper cannot be clicked. Online learners assemble the same order before uploading on the LMS.

Many learners reach the compiling stage unsure what shape the finished file should take. The MJML-023 manual’s only instruction on it is to compile the activities in a portfolio format.

We see some learners submit handwritten work. For MJML-023 the manual prints no rule on handwriting or typing, and its activities rest on web links, a YouTube upload and screenshots.

Seven mistakes in the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical and their fixes

Each slip below breaks a limit the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical manual sets.

Seven slip-ups, seven repairs

  1. A story idea grown into a draft. Fix: a different event for each activity.
  2. A draft that reaches 450 words only with its links. Fix: count the story body alone.
  3. Links to home pages or search results. Fix: link the exact article, with headline and date.
  4. A backgrounder on a topic that has gone quiet. Fix: choose a subject in the news as you write.
  5. An infographic with no source line. Fix: name the dataset, publisher and year on it.
  6. A video under 3 minutes or a link that will not open. Fix: check the length and test the link signed out.
  7. Screenshots that crop out the handle or date. Fix: capture the whole post.

Self-check before you hand in the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical

Tick a line only when it is true of the work in front of you; the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical has no stage after hand-in for adding a missing piece.

Handing over the finished portfolio

The IGNOU MJML 023 Practical portfolio goes to your Study Centre for evaluation, and to your Regional Centre if the Study Centre cannot help. Learners on the online versions of the programmes submit through the LMS. Keep a copy of the work, as the manual asks, and leave your video and X posts up until your result appears.

Did you get a receipt? Some learners walk away without one when they hand in their work. Ask the Study Centre for a dated acknowledgement of your MJML-023 portfolio, on top of the copy the manual tells you to keep.

Send your own drafts for a second reading

If you have written your story ideas, drafts, backgrounder or review for the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical and want a second reader, send them on WhatsApp at +91 93546 37830. We check them against the manual's lengths, structure and link rules and mark what to fix; you make the changes and remain the author. We do not record, post or open accounts for anyone. The check is quoted on WhatsApp, as listed on our services and charges page, and no marks or result are promised.

Questions MAJMC learners ask while building the portfolio

How to make MJML 023 practical work if I only have a phone?

The video activity is built for a phone, since the manual asks you to record on your own mobile device, and YouTube and X run as phone apps. For the 3,000-plus words of writing, plan computer time, which the MAJMC programme page expects you to have.

Can one news event serve as a story idea and a draft?

The manual says one part of the same story cannot be claimed for two activities, because a single work is evaluated only once. Choose separate events; if in doubt, ask your Study Centre.

Does the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical accept an audio story instead of a video?

Yes. Activity 5 is a "News video or audio story" of at least 3 minutes, recorded on your own mobile device and uploaded to your YouTube account, with the link in the portfolio.

Finishing the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical in MAJMC

The IGNOU MJML 023 Practical rewards steady weekly work more than a last-month push: seven activities, each with a clear limit. Plan back from the last date, keep each event to one activity, and test every piece before you compile. For the first-year theory courses that feed these stories, see the MAJMC reading on our publication site.
