The IGNOU MBAOM project is the eight-credit project course MMPP-001, registered in Semester 3 of the MBA (Operations Management). It needs an approved synopsis on an operations topic, a guide qualified in that area, and a bound report of about 50 to 60 pages sent to IGNOU Delhi.
Every figure below is traced to the MMPP-001 Project Guidelines, the MBA specialisation handbook (January 2026), the ignou.ac.in MBAOM programme page or the Common Prospectus July 2026. Where those documents disagree, this page names the disagreement instead of picking a side.
What is the IGNOU MBAOM project?
The IGNOU MBAOM project is the compulsory research project of the MBA (Operations Management) programme. It is the same project course the other ODL MBA specialisations take, but the study has to sit inside operations.
The IGNOU MBAOM project is course MMPP-001, worth eight credits. It is treated as one course for registration although it counts as two, and no study material is supplied for it. The ignou.ac.in MBAOM programme page places it in Semester 3, alongside MMPC-015 Research Methodology for Management Decisions and the operations papers MMPO-001, MMPO-002, MMPO-005 and MMPO-006. Work begins only after the Regional Centre approves the synopsis in writing. The finished report runs to about 50 to 60 double-spaced pages, not exceeding roughly 18,000 words, and is posted in bound form to the Registrar (SED) at IGNOU, Maidan Garhi. The MBA specialisation handbook of January 2026 states that the project course is evaluated only on this report, with an overall C grade, that is 50 per cent, needed to clear it.

Is MMPP-001 the same thing as MMPO-002 Project Management?
No, and this is the single most common mix-up in this specialisation. Both sit in Semester 3 and both have the word project in them, but only one of them is the project you write.

Registering for MMPO-002 does nothing for the project requirement, and passing MMPP-001 does not replace the paper. A learner needs both.

Where does the project sit in the MBAOM structure?
The programme runs 28 courses and 116 credits across four semesters, and the IGNOU MBAOM project occupies Semester 3. The ignou.ac.in MBAOM page and the specialisation handbook agree on how the eight operations papers are split, which is not true of every specialisation.
Semester 3 costs Rs 18,000 against Rs 16,000 for the other three semesters, and the specialisation handbook ties that difference to the eight-credit project. Two gaps are worth knowing before you plan: the Common Prospectus July 2026 lists the MBAOM medium as English and Hindi while the programme page and the handbook say English, and the programme page leaves its own national total fee field empty although the per-semester figures are printed. Confirm both with your Regional Centre at re-registration.
Which operations topics can the project be built on?
The project guidelines accept three shapes of study, and each one works for an operations question. The topic should preferably come from the area of specialisation, so an MBAOM learner keeps the central question inside operations rather than in marketing or finance.

On the approval proforma the subject area for most of these is “Operations Management & Information System”, which is one of the options the guidelines list. Is a logistics topic still an MBAOM project?
Yes, for an MBAOM learner. Logistics and Supply Chain Management (MMPO-005) and International Logistics and Supply Chain Management (MMPO-008) are MBAOM papers, so a supply chain study is inside the specialisation.
The caution is about a different programme. IGNOU also runs MBALS, a logistics and supply chain MBA that teaches five of the same MMPO papers, and its project course is MMPLP-001, not MMPP-001, as the Common Prospectus programme table shows. The envelope, the proforma and the fee all follow the code on your own registration record, so read that code before drafting. Learners in that programme should use the MBALS project guide for MMPLP-001. The sibling PG Diploma in Operations Management (Section 8.63 of the Common Prospectus) teaches the same eight papers across 36 credits and carries no project course at all.
Who can guide the project, and what does the proforma need?
The guidelines name three routes to an eligible guide: management faculty of the School of Management Studies at headquarters; approved academic counsellors of the Management Programme, whose bio-data need not be attached; and management faculty with five years of postgraduate teaching experience or professionals holding a Master’s in management or an allied discipline with at least five years of experience in the relevant area. For an operations topic that experience should be in operations.
A guide may hold no more than five learners at a time and is paid a token honorarium of Rs 500 by the University. A self-identified guide signs a bio-data listing degrees with specialisation, university, year and percentage, plus work experience in date order. Without the signed bio-data and proforma the synopsis is not entertained. The general rules are set out in the IGNOU project guide eligibility guide.
The synopsis itself carries five parts: introduction, rationale, objectives, research methodology and limitations. The guidelines call objectives the most important part and ask for neutral wording that does not assume the findings. A worked layout is on the IGNOU synopsis format page.
Where does the synopsis go, and where does the report go?
To two different offices. Sending the report to the Regional Centre is a common and costly error.

Regional Centre notices relaying an RSD notification of 22 September 2022 confirm that MMPP-001 synopses are submitted to and evaluated at the concerned Regional Centre. The official project guidelines on ignou.ac.in also point to the Regional Centre e-mail directory, so confirm with yours whether it takes the proposal by e-mail or by post. Timing is set by the same document: send the synopsis soon after registering, because a Regional Centre is not responsible for the timely disposal of proposals received more than six months after registration, the written decision comes within two to three months, and the guidelines want a learner to have eight to nine months in hand. What happens when something goes wrong?
Four situations account for most lost sessions, and the official documents answer each one.

Learners with 40 per cent disability or more get two years beyond the maximum duration, as the handbook records in Section 4.3. A title change after approval is covered separately in the guide to changing an approved IGNOU project topic.
How is the report written and evaluated?
The report follows the eight-part structure in the guidelines: introduction with review of literature and organisation details; research methodology, including reliability and validity of the tools; results and discussion presented in tables or graphs; summary and conclusion; recommendations; limitations and directions for further research; references; and annexures such as the questionnaire.
The bound volume must also carry a cover page with the learner’s name, enrolment number, guide’s name and the title; a table of contents with page numbers; the approved proposal, proforma and guide bio-data bound in rather than stapled; and a Certificate of Originality signed and dated by both learner and guide. A report missing any of these is returned for compliance.
The IGNOU MBAOM project is evaluated on the report. A viva happens only if the evaluator recommends it, and IGNOU publishes no duration or mark split for it. Grades convert as A for 80 per cent and above, B for 60 to 79.9, C for 50 to 59.9, D for 40 to 49.9 and E below 40, and the handbook adds that project reports cannot be re-evaluated and that projects are outside the improvement scheme. What IGNOU does not specify for this project
- A font, font size or margin. The guidelines state only A4, typed, double-spaced.
- A minimum sample size, or a minimum number of organisations for a comparison study.
- A permitted similarity percentage. The requirement is that the report is free from plagiarism, with action as per University policy.
- A referencing style, an abstract length, or a duration for the viva.
Any number quoted for these is convention, not an IGNOU rule. Settle them with your guide and keep the approved proforma as the reference point.

Frequently asked questions
Is MMPP-001 the same project course for MBAOM as for the other MBA specialisations?
Yes. The project guidelines name MBA, MBAFM, MBAHM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF together, and MBAOM learners register the same eight-credit course MMPP-001. What changes is the subject area declared on the proforma and the field the guide must be qualified in. MBA Online learners follow the same rules through the LMS portal.
Can an MBAOM project be written on supply chain or logistics?
Yes. Logistics and Supply Chain Management (MMPO-005) and International Logistics and Supply Chain Management (MMPO-008) are MBAOM papers, so a supply chain study sits inside the specialisation. A separate IGNOU programme, MBALS, also teaches these papers but has its own project course MMPLP-001, so check the code on your own registration record before writing anything.
Does the IGNOU MBAOM project have a viva?
Not by default. The MBA specialisation handbook (January 2026) states that the project course is evaluated only on the submitted report, and the project guidelines add that a learner may be asked to appear for a viva-voce if the evaluator recommends it. IGNOU publishes no duration or mark split for that viva.
