What is the regional Centre in IGNOU?

The Regional Centre has been defined under Section 2(J) of the IGNOU Act as under: “Regional Centre” means a Centre established or maintained by the University for the purpose of coordinating and supervising the work of the Study Centres in any region and for performing such other functions as may be conferred on such Centre by the Board of Management.

The University works through a network of 56 Regional Centres (RC), 11 Recognized Regional Centres (RRC) (i.e., 6, IGNOU-Army RRC, 4, IGNOU-Navy RRC, and 1, IGNOU-Assam Rifles RRC), and almost 2000 Learner Support Centres spread across the nation. The extensive network of RCs and LSCs broadens IGNOU’s reach to previously underserved rural, distant, socially and physically disadvantaged populations, providing them with flexible access to high-quality, cost-effective higher education.
Section 2(J) of the IGNOU Act defines a Regional Centre as follows: “Regional Centre” means a Centre established or maintained by the University for the purpose of coordinating and supervising the work of Study Centres in any region, as well as performing such other functions as may be conferred on such Centre by the Board of Management.

Furthermore, under Section 5(1) (XXVI) of the Act, the University is entitled “To confer autonomous status on a College or a Regional Centre in the manner laid down by the statutes”

Establishment of Regional Center

Regional Centres are formed with the help and collaboration of the relevant state governments and are in charge of promoting the ODL system in the state/region, as well as establishing, developing, maintaining, and monitoring LSCs. Regional Centres are also in charge of delivering programs and student support services, as well as organizing staff development activities.

Functions of Regional Center

A Regional Centre’s main activities include academic, administrative, and promotional. The Regional Centres are in charge of promoting the Open University system, developing, maintaining, and monitoring Study Centres and Student Support Services, and organising regional staff development courses for training coordinators, counselors, and other functionaries.
Regional Centres are sub-offices of the University that serve as resource centers in their respective regions.

  • Library with study materials, program guides, and reference books.
  • DRS and satellite signal reception equipment for interactive teleconferences. | EDUSAT facilities.
    Video and audio cassettes/CDs
  • Computer lab with computers, servers, scanners, and printers
  • Telephone and fax
  • TV, VCR, and VCD
  • Internet and associated items
  • Adequate furniture
  • University promotional brochures.
