IGNOU MBA Synopsis Rejected? Reasons and How to Resubmit (MMPP-001)

IGNOU MBA Synopsis Rejected? Here Is What to Do Next

A rejected MMPP-001 synopsis is not the end of your project. IGNOU sends written comments explaining why, and you may revise and resubmit. The one thing that decides your next step is what exactly was marked “Not Approved” — the synopsis, or your guide. The two problems have completely different fixes.

Read the proforma firstThe official Proforma for Approval of Project Proposal (MMPP-001) carries two separate verdict boxes — one for the Synopsis and one for the Supervisor — each marked Approved or Not Approved. Check which box was ticked before you rewrite a single line. Always confirm current rules with your Regional Centre and the official IGNOU website.

Why is an IGNOU MBA synopsis rejected, and what happens next?

An IGNOU MBA synopsis (MMPP-001) is rejected when the proposal is incomplete, when the research plan is weak, or when the proposed guide does not meet IGNOU’s eligibility criteria. In case of non-approval, IGNOU communicates the evaluator’s comments and suggestions for reformulating the proposal to the student in writing. The student then submits a revised project proposal along with a fresh Project Proposal Proforma, a copy of the rejected proposal, the proforma carrying the evaluator’s comments, and the Project Proposal Number (PP No.) allotted by the Regional Centre. If instead the guide was not approved, the student must select a new eligible guide and submit the proposal afresh with the new guide’s signature — IGNOU treats that as an entirely new proposal. Rejection does not end the project; only an unrevised proposal does.

Read the verdict

What does “Not Approved” actually mean on your proforma?

Most students read the word “rejected” and assume the whole proposal has failed. In practice the Regional Centre returns the proforma with the evaluator’s comments and a counter-signature, and the outcome falls into one of three situations. Identifying yours correctly saves weeks of wasted effort.

Situation 1 Never accepted

The proposal was incomplete — an unsigned proforma or missing guide bio-data. IGNOU’s rule is blunt: without the duly signed original bio-data and proforma, the synopsis is not entertained at all, so no PP No. is issued.

Situation 2 Synopsis not approved

The proposal was accepted and evaluated, but the topic, objectives or methodology did not convince the evaluator. You receive written comments and resubmit a corrected proposal.

Situation 3 Supervisor not approved

Your research plan may be fine, but the proposed guide does not meet the eligibility criteria. You must find a new eligible guide and submit again as a new proposal.

The practical test is simple. If you never received a Project Proposal Number, your proposal was almost certainly never accepted, and the problem is paperwork rather than research. If you did receive a PP No. and later received comments, the proposal was evaluated on merit, and the comments tell you exactly what to fix.

Common reasons

Why do IGNOU MBA synopses get rejected?

Rejections cluster around a small number of recurring problems, and almost all of them are avoidable. BK Sahni, who has guided 5,00,000 students till date, notes that the single most common cause is not a weak idea at all — it is an incomplete document, where the guide’s signed bio-data or a fully filled proforma is simply missing, so the proposal never even reaches the evaluator.

Reason for rejectionWhat IGNOU expects instead
Incomplete or unsigned paperworkThe proforma must be filled in every respect and signed by both student and guide, with the guide’s detailed bio-data signed in original. Approved academic counsellors are exempt from the bio-data requirement.
Guide not eligibleThe guide must satisfy the eligibility criteria — for example, a management faculty member with five years of postgraduate teaching experience, or a professional holding a Master’s in management or an allied discipline with at least five years of experience in that area. A guide may not supervise more than five students at any one time.
Guide from the wrong specialisationThe guide should be a specialist in the topic’s area. A finance topic needs a finance guide; a marketing topic needs a marketing guide.
Vague or unmeasurable objectivesIGNOU calls objectives the most important aspect of any project. They should be stated clearly, precisely and in neutral terms, without assuming what the research will find.
Thin research methodologyThe proposal should set out the research design, the nature and source of data, the sample and sampling technique with a rationale, the tools to be used and their relevance to the objectives, and how the data will be analysed.
Topic too broad or off-specialisationThe study should be on a topic preferably from your MBA area of specialisation, with a definitive title that communicates what is actually being studied.
Enrolment number problemsIf your maximum programme duration is over, seek re-admission before sending the synopsis. If your synopsis was approved on an earlier enrolment number, approval must be sought again on the new one.

If the comments point at the topic itself rather than the paperwork, it is worth stepping back before rewriting. The guidance on choosing the right IGNOU MBA project topic covers how to test a topic for scope and data access, and the IGNOU synopsis and proposal guide sets out the structure a proposal is expected to follow.

Resubmission

How do you resubmit a rejected IGNOU MBA synopsis?

When a proposal is not approved, IGNOU communicates the evaluator’s comments and suggestions for reformulating it. The resubmission is not simply a corrected synopsis in an envelope — it is a specific bundle of documents, and leaving any of them out invites a second rejection.

  1. Read the evaluator’s comments line by line

The comments are written on the proforma itself, and the evaluator may continue on the reverse side. Treat each comment as a required change, not a suggestion.

  2. Rework the proposal with your guide

The proposal is prepared in consultation with the guide, so the revision should be too. Concentrate on whichever section the evaluator questioned — usually the objectives or the methodology.

  3. Fill a fresh Project Proposal Proforma

Do not reuse or photocopy the old form. A new proforma must be completed and signed with dates by both you and your guide.

  4. Attach the rejected proposal and the marked proforma

The revised proposal must be accompanied by a copy of the rejected proposal and the proforma carrying the evaluator’s comments. This is what lets the evaluator see what changed.

  5. Quote the Project Proposal Number

Include the PP No. allotted by the Regional Centre when your proposal was first accepted. It is the reference number for all further correspondence.

  6. Send it to the right address and wait

ODL students send the bundle to the Regional Director of their Regional Centre, with “MMPP-001” written prominently on the envelope. MBA (Online) students submit through the LMS Portal.

The other path

What if your guide is not approved?

This case works differently, and it catches students out. If the proposed guide is not approved by the faculty, you are advised accordingly and must change the guide, then submit the project proposal afresh carrying the new guide’s signature. IGNOU treats that submission as a new proposal, not a revision — and the same applies if you decide to change your guide for any other reason later.

Before approaching a replacement, check the eligibility criteria properly, because a second unqualified guide simply repeats the problem. The bio-data you attach should state the guide’s qualifications with specialisation, the awarding institution and year, and detailed work experience in chronological order, so that the faculty can actually assess eligibility from the document itself.

This walkthrough explains the synopsis and approval process for the IGNOU MBA project in plain terms, so you can match the resubmission steps above to what you see on screen.

Timing

How long does IGNOU take to approve or reject a synopsis?

After the synopsis is evaluated by the expert, written communication about approval or non-approval is sent to the learner within two to three months of the proposal reaching the Regional Centre. That is the official window, and it is the reason a rejection hurts most when the synopsis was submitted late.

The timing rules are worth taking seriously. The synopsis may be submitted throughout the year, but only after registration for MMPP-001 — a sequence designed to leave you at least eight to nine months to complete the project work. If a proposal reaches the Regional Centre more than six months after registration for MMPP-001, the Regional Centre is not responsible for disposing of it in time, which means a single rejection at that stage can push your submission into the next cycle. Once your revised proposal is approved, you can track the project’s progress later through the IGNOU project status guide.

Prevention

How can you get approval on the first attempt?

Approval is largely a matter of completeness and precision. Before the envelope leaves your hands, run through this list:

  • The proforma is filled in every respect and signed, with dates, by both you and your guide.
  • The guide’s bio-data is attached, signed in original, and shows qualifications and experience clearly enough to prove eligibility.
  • The subject area on the proforma matches the topic — for a study of a firm’s financial performance, the subject area is Finance.
  • The title is definitive and specific, because the final report must carry exactly the title that is approved.
  • Objectives are precise, measurable and neutrally worded.
  • The methodology names the research design, data sources, sample and sampling technique, tools, and the analysis plan.
  • You have kept a copy of everything you sent.

For the full official rules on the proposal, the proforma and the report that follows, consult the MMPP-001 project guidelines published on IGNOU’s eGyanKosh repository, and the formatting expectations set out in the IGNOU MBA project report guide.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I resubmit my IGNOU MBA synopsis after it is rejected?

Yes. In case of non-approval, IGNOU communicates the evaluator’s comments and suggestions for reformulating the proposal. You then submit the revised proposal along with a fresh Project Proposal Proforma, a copy of the rejected proposal, the proforma bearing the evaluator’s comments, and the Project Proposal Number allotted by your Regional Centre.

Do I need to change my topic if my synopsis is rejected?

Not necessarily. If the comments concern the objectives, the methodology or the paperwork, you can revise the same proposal and resubmit it. A change of topic is only required when the evaluator’s comments indicate the topic itself is unsuitable — for example, when it falls outside your area of specialisation or cannot realistically be researched.

What happens if my project guide is not approved?

You must select a new guide who meets IGNOU’s eligibility criteria and submit the project proposal afresh with the new guide’s signature on a new proposal proforma. IGNOU considers this a new proposal. The same rule applies if you choose to change your guide for any other reason.

How long does IGNOU take to respond to a resubmitted synopsis?

Written communication regarding approval or non-approval is sent within two to three months of the proposal being received at the Regional Centre. Because a rejection restarts that clock, resubmit promptly and confirm expected timelines with your Regional Centre.

Can I start writing my project report while waiting for approval?

No. Project work may be taken up only after the synopsis is approved, and written communication of approval has been received. Starting early is risky, because if the revised proposal is approved with changes, work based on the earlier version may no longer match the approved title and plan.
