The MTTM-16 dissertation in ninety words

The IGNOU MTTM project is the 8-credit dissertation of the Master of Tourism and Travel Management: MTTM-16 in the older MTTM programme and MTTMP-119 in MTTM_NEW. Under the MTTM-16 Dissertation Guide you post a proposal of no more than 1,000 words, with Annexure A signed by your supervisor, to the Programme Coordinator at Block 15. After the approval letter arrives you write 10,000 to 15,000 words and post one copy to SED at Block 12. A score of 40 per cent passes.

  1. The two packets go to two different offices. The proposal goes by Registered Post to the Programme Coordinator (MTTM), SOTHSSM, Block No. 15, 2nd Floor; the report goes to the Registrar, Student Evaluation Division, Block-12. (Guide pp. 10, 19)
  2. The Guide describes no viva and no marks split. The report goes to an examiner and you need 40 per cent. (pp. 6, 19)
  3. The proposal has no last date. The 31 May and 30 November dates belong to the report and decide whether the June or the December TEE evaluates it. (pp. 19 and 20)
  4. The proposal has exactly seven parts. Abstract, background and hypotheses are not among them; the chapter outline and the preliminary bibliography are. (p. 9)
  5. The Rs 500 evaluation fee applies to projects above 4 credits from the January 2023 admission cycle, and IGNOU’s December 2026 notice takes it on the Samarth portal by 30 November 2026. (Prospectus p. 27; IGNOU announcement, 18 September 2026)

Overview of IGNOU MTTM Project (MTTM 16)

Every IGNOU MTTM project starts from one fact the forms rarely explain: the same 8-credit dissertation has carried three course codes. The MTTM full form is Master of Tourism and Travel Management, offered by IGNOU’s tourism school, and the dissertation is its research component. The Guide calls it “a preliminary form of research”, an investigation that is “largely your own work” from the first idea to the final report, with a supervisor to guide you (p. 6).

Students type the code three ways: MTTM 16, MTTM-16 and MTTM16 with no space. All three point to the same course. One caution from our searches: Uttarakhand Open University runs its own MTTM programme with codes such as MTTM-305, so check that any file you download carries IGNOU’s name.

The school’s name is also printed three ways, which confuses students writing the envelope:

Reading the MTTM 16 Dissertation Guide, page by page

The MTTM 16 dissertation guide is a 26-page booklet issued by SOTHSSM in March 2017 and hosted on eGyanKosh. For anyone doing the IGNOU MTTM project under the older code, it is the only published rulebook, and almost every mistake we see traces back to a page nobody read. The official IGNOU MTTM-16 Dissertation Guide PDF is here on eGyanKosh (the catalogue record is eGyanKosh item 11435); copies on other sites may be incomplete.

IGNOU MTTM Project Guidelines and Eligibility

The IGNOU MTTM project is compulsory: the Guide states that the award of the degree is subject to successful completion of the dissertation (p. 6). Every rule below is the Guide’s own, with its page.

RuleWhat the Guide saysPage
StatusCompulsory dissertation component of MTTM, 8 credits6

OriginalityMaterial directly copied from other projects or dissertations, or directly downloaded from websites, is disqualified and not evaluated; you do the dissertation again17, 20
EvaluationSent to an examiner; reports evaluated twice a year, with the June and December TEE19
Keep the GuideRetain it until you have completed the whole programme14

When you start depends on your programme. The 2026 second-year assignment booklet of the older MTTM lists MTTM 16 (Dissertation) under Semester III, next to MTTM 09 to 11. In MTTM_NEW, MTTMP-119 sits in Semester IV, after MTTM-113 Research Methodology for Tourism and Hospitality in Semester III. The Guide sets no minimum number of completed courses before the proposal goes in.

How to Choose your IGNOU MTTM Project Topic

A theme is not a topic, and the IGNOU MTTM project Guide says so in as many words. “Use of Technology in tourism” is a theme; “Technology in hotel marketing: A case study of ITDC” and “Impact of technology on small travel agencies: A case study of travel agencies in Lucknow” are topics (p. 11). The sample themes sit under four heads, and the Guide adds that you are “absolutely free” to go beyond them (p. 14).

Its second test is practical. Choose an area you know and can reach, close by or within your travelling range, on which data will be available. Its own example: a Kashmir topic only makes sense if you have visited or are visiting Kashmir; otherwise the work rests on “bookish knowledge” and defeats its purpose (p. 9). Before you settle, run the five-question readiness check on page 8.

Guide headSample themes in the Guide (pp. 11 to 13)Narrowed direction we would test
Tourism ManagementCarrying capacity of sites; host guest relationship and visitor management; safety and security; HRD policiesPeak-hour crowding at a ticketed monument near you; front-office staff turnover in the budget hotels of one town
Tourism Resources and ProductsFairs and festivals; crafts and craftsmen; museums; religious and pilgrimage tourismVisitor spending at one district fair; how craftsmen in one cluster sell to tourists
Tourism MarketingDistribution channels; destination branding; tourist satisfaction; technology in marketingHow homestays in one hill town receive bookings; satisfaction of visitors to one state tourism unit
Tourism ImpactsEnvironmental impacts in your locality; community perception; economic impactsResidents’ views of tourism growth in a village near a sanctuary; jobs created by one new circuit

Our examples, not IGNOU topics: check each against your access and your supervisor’s advice. For general method, see how to choose an IGNOU project topic.

Tourism Theme-to-Topic Narrower

A planning aid: the themes are printed in section 16.4 of the Guide; the title pattern is ours, not an IGNOU rule.

This tool needs JavaScript. The plain-text method below the tool gives the same steps.

Themes are listed in the MTTM-16 Guide, section 16.4.

For example: Visitor crowding, Online bookings, Staff training needs.

For example: Visitors and Site Staff, Homestay Operators, Local Residents.

6. Can you visit this place yourself?
7. The guide’s readiness check (p. 8)

I am familiar with research done on themes related to my topic.

I clearly know the steps I will follow in my research.

I have an adequate theoretical framework of study.

I know the sources from which I will collect the data.

I have the ability, motivation and drive to complete each step.

How the working title is built

The tool lists only the sample themes printed in section 16.4 of the Guide. It joins your focus, place and group into one working title in the pattern “focus in place: a study of group”, which narrows a theme the way the Guide’s own examples do. If you cannot visit the place, it repeats the Guide’s warning against topics you cannot visit or experience. Every “No” in the readiness check returns the advice printed beside that question on page 8. IGNOU prescribes no title pattern; your supervisor and the Programme Coordinator decide.

Selection of IGNOU MTTM Project Guide Supervisor

Your IGNOU MTTM project is guided by a supervisor recognised by IGNOU, and the Guide allows four routes (pp. 6 and 7):

SupervisorCondition in the GuideExtra paper
MTTM counsellor at a study centreAll MTTM counsellors at study centres are recognised supervisors; the list is with your Study Centre CoordinatorNone
IGNOU tourism facultyDelhi-based learners may approach the faculty; the Guide advises a supervisor you can easily reachNone stated
University or college teacherAt least three years of teaching experienceBrief bio-data with the proposal, for approval by the Programme Coordinator in New Delhi
Tourism industry professionalRank of Manager or aboveBrief bio-data with the proposal, for approval by the Programme Coordinator in New Delhi

The MTTM-16 Guide does not ask for a master’s degree in tourism, a separate consent letter or a cap on learners per supervisor. It asks only for a “brief bio-data”. In the bio-data we suggest name, designation, institution or company, years of teaching or present rank, and a contact number and e-mail, so the Programme Coordinator can match the person to a route. For general rules across IGNOU courses, see our IGNOU project guide eligibility page; for MTTM-16 the four routes above are the rule.

Seven parts inside 1,000 words: the MTTM-16 synopsis

The proposal and the synopsis are the same document. For the IGNOU MTTM project the Guide asks for one of not more than 1,000 words, prepared in consultation with your supervisor, and “essentially a description of what you propose to do and how you intend to go about it” (p. 9). It must contain these seven parts:

No.PartWhat the Guide asks forWhere proposals slip
1TitleTitle of the proposed dissertationA theme used as a title
2RationaleWhy you have chosen the topicLeft out, or a paragraph of praise for tourism
3ObjectivesState clearly what you intend to achieve or find outObjectives that announce the answer in advance
4Review of relevant literatureEvaluation of previous research, to identify the research gap and give a theoretical baseA list of books with no gap stated
5Research plan and methodsAn outline of the plan and the methods you will useNo sample, place or data source named
6Chapter outlineTentative chapters, with a brief outline of eachMissing altogether
7Preliminary bibliographySources referred to while preparing the proposalMissing, or not matching the review

Three practical points sit beside the list. If you plan to study an organisation, seek its approval at the proposal stage. Choose a geographical area you know and can reach. Discuss the draft with your supervisor, counsellor and people who know the field. The Guide prescribes no font, spacing or page count for the proposal, and asks for two copies, “preferably typed” (p. 10). Our sample synopsis shows the seven parts in about 790 words on a carrying-capacity topic. Objectives are where most drafts go wrong; our guide to writing project objectives has before-and-after pairs.

MTTM-16 Proposal and Report Packet Checker

Built from pages 6 to 10 and 17 to 20 of the MTTM-16 Dissertation Guide (SOTHSSM, March 2017), read in October 2026.

This checker needs JavaScript. The plain checklist below the tool shows the same rules.

What are you checking?
Tick what your proposal packet already has

The guide caps the proposal at 1,000 words.

Does your study involve an organisation?

Rules behind each tick

Every tick box is one requirement printed in the MTTM-16 Dissertation Guide, with its page shown in the result. For the proposal, it flags any of the seven parts you leave unticked, a word count above 1,000, a supervisor outside the four routes, a missing bio-data for a teacher or industry supervisor, and missing organisation approval. For the report, it flags fewer than 10,000 words and works out which TEE a given arrival date falls into: 1 December to 31 May goes with the June TEE, 1 June to 30 November with the December TEE. It does not predict approval or marks.

Plain checklist: seven parts; not more than 1,000 words; Annexure A signed by the supervisor as the first page; bio-data if the supervisor is not an IGNOU counsellor; organisation approval if needed; two copies; full address with PIN; Registered Post; envelope marked MTTM-16.

A second reading before you post

Before your MTTM-16 envelope is sealed, have the draft read

An MTTM-16 proposal is posted to New Delhi and the answer comes back by Speed Post. A missing chapter outline, an unsigned Annexure A, an incomplete address or a supervisor without bio-data can cost you that wait. At the report stage the Guide is stricter: a report without the approval letter may be returned, and copied material is not evaluated at all (pp. 10, 17).

Before Block 15 sees your proposal, we look at

  • All seven parts present, inside 1,000 words
  • Objectives that say what you will study, not what you expect to find
  • A topic narrowed from a theme, on a place you can reach
  • A literature review that ends in a gap, matched by the bibliography
  • Annexure A complete, the supervisor route and bio-data in order

Before SED gets your report, we look at

  • Title identical to the approved proposal
  • Annexure B, Annexure C, approval letter, contents, lists, acknowledgement, in that order
  • Methodology stated at the start, findings tied to your own data
  • Bibliography under separate heads, tables and figures numbered
  • Length within 10,000 to 15,000 words or more, in English
See how synopsis and report correction worksCorrection of a learner-written synopsis costs Rs 1,000 and of a report Rs 2,000 (October 2026). You remain the author of your work and its data; we return your own draft with corrections against the MTTM-16 Guide. Approval is decided by the Programme Coordinator, MTTM, and marks by IGNOU’s examiner.

Annexure A on page 22: seventeen boxes and who fills each

The proforma must be “filled up in all respect including the signature of your supervisor” and should “invariably be the first or covering page” of the proposal (p. 10). For the IGNOU MTTM project this one sheet carries your identity, your title and the supervisor’s approval, so every box matters.

Step-by-Step Guide to do IGNOU MTTM Project

The Guide closes the IGNOU MTTM project with a four-stage chart (p. 21). Stage 1: read the Guide, develop and screen ideas, narrow them, assess feasibility, select one topic and prepare the proposal with your supervisor. Stage 2: send the proposal to the Programme Coordinator, wait for approval and include any changes suggested. Stage 3: plan and carry out data collection, field visits and questionnaires to a time schedule, discussing with your supervisor throughout. Final stage: analyse, write Draft 1, show it to your supervisor, work the suggestions into Draft 2, format the report in two copies and mail one to SED.

The two posted packets go to two different blocks of the same campus:

IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068

Registered Post only. Annexure A on top, then the proposal, then the bio-data if your route needs one.

Reply: Letter of Acknowledgement and Comment by Speed Post (Guide p. 10).

One of two copies; keep the other. Approval letter bound in.

Last dates: 31 May for the June TEE, 30 November for the December TEE (Guide p. 19).

The Guide asks for the proposal mark in bold on top of the envelope, printed with a space on each side of the hyphen; MTTM-16 written clearly is what matters. The report envelope carries “MTTM-16 DISSERTATION”. SED has also opened an online upload for final reports in some cycles, and its portal address changes each cycle; when the SED notice for your TEE opens one, follow that notice’s instructions.

The Letter of Acknowledgement and Comment, and what to do with it

The reply to an IGNOU MTTM project proposal is a written letter from the Programme Coordinator, MTTM. The Important Information sheet says it will state whether the proposal is approved, reframed or not approved; if it is not approved you get reasons and suggestions and re-submit until it is approved (p. 25). Four rules from page 10 follow the letter: begin the dissertation only after approval, keep the letter safe, attach it to the final report with a photocopy kept for yourself, and expect a report without it to be returned.

The letter also carries an authorisation that may help you make enquiries in organisations connected with your work. The Guide adds that it does not give free access: each organisation takes its own decision. If you have no reply after some weeks, write to the Programme Coordinator, MTTM, SOTHSSM, Block-15, IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, call 011-29571756 or e-mail mtm@ignou.ac.in (Guide p. 14), quoting your enrolment number and the date of posting. For the general pattern across courses, see our IGNOU synopsis approval process page.

Is Primary Research mandatory for MTTM 16 Project?

The MTTM-16 Guide never says “primary data is mandatory”, yet it plainly expects field-based work. It says the dissertation should give you field experience and exposure to the working methods of the tourism industry, that you should never take a topic for an area you cannot visit or experience, and that a dissertation built on bookish knowledge defeats its purpose (pp. 4, 6, 9). Its methodology section names both kinds of data: primary data from observation, interviews, questionnaires, surveys and focus groups, and secondary data from published or unpublished sources, journals and newspapers (p. 15).

In practice, plan some first-hand data for the IGNOU MTTM project: a questionnaire, interviews or structured observation at a place you can reach, supported by secondary sources. The Guide’s own advice on questionnaires is to consult your supervisor, speak to experts and read related work first, because “the kind of answers you get” depends on the questions you ask (pp. 15 and 16). Our questionnaire and data collection guide covers the mechanics.

How do you find relevant research materials for the IGNOU MTTM dissertation?

Start with what IGNOU already gives you. An IGNOU MTTM dissertation can draw on the MTTM course blocks on eGyanKosh, which cover the Guide’s themes of markets, impacts, planning and products, and MTTM_NEW learners have MTTM-113 Research Methodology for Tourism and Hospitality. Our eGyanKosh guide explains how to find course blocks.

The Guide then lists the material a tourism dissertation draws on: written records, articles, copies of rules and regulations, recorded interviews, your own diary, observations, questionnaires, government documents, newspaper clippings and minutes of group meetings (p. 16). Two habits it asks for are worth adopting from day one: note the date and place of every interview, and keep separate files for different kinds of sources. When sources disagree, record both and keep facts apart from opinions, “making sure that other people’s judgements do not appear as your own”. For context data on Indian tourism, the Ministry of Tourism publishes India Tourism Statistics; for international comparison, UN Tourism publishes reports and indicators. Use the latest editions and cite them under separate heads.

Writing 10,000 to 15,000 words the way the Guide asks

Section 16.6 of the Guide, the writing chapter of the IGNOU MTTM project rulebook, is short on rules and long on habits. Write plain English and avoid jargon and slang; break a sentence you cannot end into simpler ones; build each chapter around one idea or closely related ideas; give a reference whenever you quote; and leave out padding, because “a good Dissertation is an honest writing” (p. 17). In editing, read the draft as if someone else wrote it, change unnecessary passive voice to active, test every adjective and cut words that add nothing (p. 18).

The Remember list on page 20 adds the content rules: the work must be original and in your own language, arguments must be substantiated by your data, information should be properly documented, with photographs where needed, the research methodology should be stated at the beginning, and the bibliography should list records, documents, reports, the questionnaire format, interviews, group meetings, newspapers and magazines under separate heads. Our word limit and page count guide converts 10,000 to 15,000 words into typed pages.

Annexure B, Annexure C, then the approval letter: the report’s page order

The Guide fixes the sequence of material in the IGNOU MTTM project report (p. 18), and the binder should follow it exactly:

OrderPartWhat goes on it
1Cover page (Annexure B, p. 23)Title; “Under the supervision of” with the supervisor’s name; submitted to IGNOU for the award of “Masters of Tourism & Travel Management (MTTM)”; student name, enrolment number, study centre, regional centre
2First page (Annexure C, p. 24)Programme code MTTM, course code MTTM-16, enrolment number (nine boxes), study centre code (four boxes), regional centre, title; your declaration, signature, name, address and date of submission; the supervisor’s certificate recommending evaluation, with signature, name, address, study centre, regional centre and date
3Letter of Proposal/Synopsis ApprovalFrom the Programme Coordinator, MTTM, New Delhi
4Table of ContentsWith page numbers
5List of Figures/TablesNumbered
6AcknowledgementYour own words
7Main textChapters, bibliography and appendices

The Guide leaves line spacing, margins and citation style open and calls Times New Roman “more or less standard”, not compulsory. Pages are numbered at bottom-centre. Annexure C’s printed declaration refers to the “Masters Degree in Tourism Management”; leave the official wording as printed. Our report format template lays the pages out with empty table shells and sentence frames.

IGNOU MTTM 16 Project Submission Deadlines

The Guide sets last dates only for the final report of the IGNOU MTTM project. The proposal can go at any time; leave room for the reply, since you may begin only after approval.

Report reaches IGNOUEvaluated withRule
1 December to 31 MayJune TEELast date 31 May of the same year as the June TEE
1 June to 30 NovemberDecember TEELast date 30 November of the same year as the December TEE
After a last dateThe next TEEThe Guide’s example: a report submitted on 1 June is evaluated in December, not June

Two current points sit outside the 2017 Guide. First, the Common Prospectus July 2026 sets the project evaluation fee at Rs 500 for projects above 4 credits, applicable from the January 2023 admission cycle and paid with the Term-End Examination form (p. 27). IGNOU’s announcement of 18 September 2026 takes the December 2026 project fee on the Samarth portal, last date 30 November 2026; SED’s guideline for that TEE also prints the rates for learners admitted before January 2023, so find your row before paying. Second, SED announces upload windows and any extension each cycle; our December 2026 project submission page tracks those notices.

The re-do rule: below 40 per cent you do the dissertation again. The 2017 Guide asked for a demand draft of Rs 600 with the new dissertation; that instruction predates the Samarth fee system, so follow the SED notice for your TEE before paying anything.

MTTMP 119 dissertation: what is confirmed and what is still unpublished

Learners admitted to MTTM_NEW do the IGNOU MTTM project as MTTMP-119 Dissertation Work. Two IGNOU documents confirm the basics. The programme page lists it as a project course of 8 credits in Semester IV, coordinated by Dr. Tangjakhombi Akoijam, Associate Professor, who also coordinates the programme (akoijam@ignou.ac.in). Its stated aim is to strengthen research skills through independent research on tourism and hospitality, applying theory, research methods and analysis to real issues. The Common Prospectus July 2026 lists the same course on page 90. MTTM_NEW is open to any graduate, in English, for 24 to 48 months, at Rs 9,100 per year (Rs 18,200 for the programme), exam fees extra.

What is not confirmed: as of October 2026 neither the programme page nor eGyanKosh shows a separate MTTMP 119 dissertation guide or proforma. The MTTM-16 Guide is the latest SOTHSM dissertation document we could read, and Dr. Akoijam was on its 2017 revision team, but that does not make its rules official for MTTMP-119; its printed Annexure A even says “Course Code: MTTM-16”. Before you post a packet, ask SOTHSM which proforma and address to use. Your MTTM_NEW courses are good sources of topics:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Questions MTTM learners send us

What is MTTM, and where does MTTM-16 fit in it?

MTTM is IGNOU’s Master of Tourism and Travel Management. MTTM-16 is the compulsory 8-credit dissertation of the older MTTM programme, earlier coded MTM-16; MTTM_NEW learners do the same kind of work as MTTMP-119 in Semester IV.

Is MTTM16 the same course as MTTM-16 and MTM-16?

Yes. MTTM16 is the same code typed without the hyphen, and MTM-16 is the earlier code; the Guide’s course team page reads “MTM-16 (Now MTTM-16)”. Write MTTM-16 on your forms, as Annexures A and C print it.

Where can I get the IGNOU MTTM-16 dissertation guide PDF?

From eGyanKosh: MTTM-16 Dissertation Guide (PDF). It contains the rules, the sample themes and Annexures A, B and C. Copies on other sites may be incomplete or altered.

Is there a viva for the MTTM 16 dissertation?

The Guide describes none, and no marks split either. It says the dissertation is sent to an examiner and that you need at least 40 per cent (Grade D). If you are ever called for a viva, follow that letter; our IGNOU project viva questions page has general practice questions.

What is the word count for the IGNOU MTTM project report?

Between 10,000 and 15,000 words, or more depending on the topic (Guide pp. 6, 18). The proposal is a separate document capped at 1,000 words.

Can I submit my synopsis handwritten?

The Guide asks for the proposal “preferably typed” and the report typed or word-processed. Some MTTM-16 synopses still reach us handwritten; a typed copy is what the Guide prefers and what a reader expects.

My synopsis was not approved. What do I send back?

The revised proposal in proper format, with a copy of the rejection letter that carries the Programme Coordinator’s comments (Guide p. 11). When asked to resubmit, many learners forget that copy of the original letter, and the second packet then arrives without the context the reader needs.

Should I attach filled questionnaires to the report?

The Guide lists the questionnaire format among the sources the bibliography should name and is silent on filled forms. Some students bind every filled questionnaire at the end of the report; attaching one blank copy as an appendix is the common practice.

Can I use a solved MTTM 16 project?

Not as your submission. The Guide states that material directly copied from other projects or dissertations, or directly downloaded from websites, is disqualified and not evaluated, and the learner has to do the dissertation again. Use samples only to understand format.

Is synopsis approval needed before I start the dissertation?

Yes. Begin only after the Letter of Approval arrives, keep it safe and bind it into the final report; the University may return a report submitted without it (Guide p. 10).

Can I change my topic after approval?

The report must carry the same title as the approved proposal (Guide p. 19), so a new topic means a new proposal. Our guide to changing a project topic after approval explains the usual route.

Is MTTMP 119 dissertation work done under the MTTM-16 Guide?

Not officially. No separate MTTMP-119 guide or proforma had been published as of October 2026, and the MTTM-16 Annexure A prints the MTTM-16 code. Ask SOTHSM which form and address to use before you post.
