IGNOU MBAHM Project: the MMPP-001 route from HR synopsis to posted report
The IGNOU MBAHM project is the 8-credit course MMPP-001 that every MBA (Human Resource Management) learner registers in Semester 3. Work starts only after the Regional Centre approves a synopsis signed by an eligible guide, and it ends with one bound, typed report sent to the Registrar (SED) at IGNOU headquarters.

What is the IGNOU MBAHM project?
The IGNOU MBAHM project is the compulsory project course MMPP-001 in the Master of Business Administration (Human Resource Management) offered by the School of Management Studies. MMPP-001 carries 8 credits and is registered as one course, although IGNOU treats it as equal to two courses, and no study material is issued for it. An MBAHM learner registers MMPP-001 in Semester 3, together with MMPC-015 Research Methodology for Management Decisions, MMPC-016 and four HR specialisation courses. The learner selects a topic, preferably in human resource management, finds an eligible guide, and sends a synopsis with a signed proforma to the Regional Director of the learner’s own Regional Centre. The study begins only after written approval. The final report runs to about 50 to 60 double-spaced pages, not exceeding roughly 18,000 words, and an ODL learner sends one bound copy to the Registrar (SED), IGNOU, New Delhi. Evaluation rests on the report alone.
MBAHM and “MBA HR” name the same programme. IGNOU writes the code as MBAHM, and the MMPP-001 guidelines apply equally to MBA, MBAFM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF learners. The IGNOU project course codes list shows that shared code in context. For an HR learner, three things change: the subject area written on the proforma, the kind of topic, and the specialisation of the guide.
Source context: the MMPP-001 Project Guidelines (School of Management Studies) state the 8-credit weight, the absence of study material and the preference for a specialisation topic. The MBA Student Handbook, Section 3.9, states that the project course is evaluated only on the submitted report.
Timing
In which semester does an MBAHM learner register MMPP-001?
Semester 3. The MBA Student Handbook places MMPP-001 among the seven Semester 3 registrations, and the ignou.ac.in MBAHM page lists the course as 8 credits, Semester 3.
Semester 3 therefore carries 32 credits (six 4-credit courses plus the 8-credit project) against 28 in each other semester. The Common Prospectus July 2026 prices the MBAHM programme at Rs. 16,000 for Semesters I, II and IV and Rs. 18,000 for Semester III, and the handbook explains that the third semester costs more because it contains the 8-credit project.
The handbook also fixes one credit at 30 hours of learner study. By that rule, MMPP-001 represents about 240 hours of work, spread across synopsis, fieldwork and writing.
The MMPP-001 guidelines ask for the proposal to reach the Regional Centre after MMPP-001 registration, so that the learner keeps at least 8 to 9 months to finish before the fourth semester runs out. A proposal that arrives more than six months after registration falls outside the period for which, under the guidelines, the Regional Centre takes responsibility for timely disposal. A learner who waits for Semester 4 to begin the synopsis is already late.

Topic
What kind of topic suits an IGNOU MBAHM project?
A human resource management topic, framed as one of the three study types that the MMPP-001 guidelines allow.
The guidelines list three forms of study:
- A comprehensive case study of one organisation or a multi-functional problem, ending in analysis and recommendations.
- An inter-organisational study that compares organisations, validates a theory or surveys management practices.
- A field study, meaning an empirical study built on data the learner collects.
The title should be definitive and should tell the evaluator what is being studied. The guidelines also say the final report must carry the title the evaluator approved, so a vague title becomes a permanent problem. A later change of topic is handled as a fresh proposal, which the guide on changing a project topic after approval explains.
How can an MBAHM course unit become a study?
The HR course outlines in the MBA Student Handbook make a sound starting point. The rows below show how one unit narrows into a researchable question; they illustrate framing only, and approval rests with the evaluator.

Guide
Who can guide an MBAHM project?
Four kinds of person qualify, and for an HR topic the guide should be a specialist in human resource management.

The guidelines add three limits. A guide may supervise no more than five learners at any one time. Guides are asked to restrict themselves to their core specialisation, so an HR topic needs an HR specialist rather than, say, a finance professional. Synopsis
What must the MBAHM synopsis and proforma contain?
Five parts in the synopsis, a proforma signed by learner and guide with dates, and the guide’s original signed bio-data.
According to the MMPP-001 guidelines, the synopsis should cover:
- Introduction: a short background to the subject.
- Rationale: why this topic was chosen.
- Objectives: stated clearly, in behavioural terms, and in neutral language that does not assume the findings.
- Research methodology: research design, nature and source of data, sample and sampling technique with the reason for choosing the organisation, tools such as a questionnaire and their link to the objectives, data collection method, and the statistical tools for analysis.
- Limitations of the proposed study, if any.

How should an HR learner fill the proforma?
The “Proforma for Approval of Project Proposal (MMPP-001)” asks for the enrolment number, study centre, Regional Centre, subject area, topic, the guide’s name and address, whether the guide is an IGNOU academic counsellor (with study centre code and courses counselled), and the number of learners the guide is already supervising. For the subject area, the guidelines list “HRM & OB” among the options, which is the natural entry for an MBAHM topic.
The guide’s bio-data must list degrees with specialisation, university, year and percentage, plus work experience in date order. Format examples for the synopsis itself sit on the IGNOU synopsis page.
Approval
How does the MBAHM synopsis reach IGNOU, and what comes back?
It goes by post to the Regional Director of the learner’s own Regional Centre, and a written decision is due within two to three months.
- Register MMPP-001 in Semester 3. The guidelines ask for the proposal after this registration, not before it.
- Settle the topic and the guide, then prepare the synopsis in consultation with the guide.
- Sign and date the proforma (learner and guide) and attach the guide’s original signed bio-data. An approved academic counsellor does not need to send bio-data.
- Send one copy to the Regional Director of the learner’s own Regional Centre, with “MMPP-001” written prominently on the envelope, and keep a copy. MBA (Online) learners submit through the LMS portal instead.
- The Regional Centre checks the file. A complete proposal receives a Project Proposal number (PP No.), which is quoted in all later letters.
- A written communication of approval or non-approval follows within two to three months of receipt.
- If the proposal is not approved, the learner resubmits with a fresh proforma, the rejected proposal carrying the evaluator’s comments, and the PP No. A new or changed guide always means a new proposal.

Report
How should the IGNOU MBAHM project report be written and bound?
About 50 to 60 double-spaced typed pages, not exceeding roughly 18,000 words excluding appendices and exhibits, in the order the guidelines set.
A reasonable variation either side is permitted. The structure is:
- Introduction and review of literature, with details of the organisation studied.
- Research methodology, including tools, their reliability and validity, and statistics used.
- Results and discussion, with tables or graphs.
- Summary and conclusion.
- Recommendations.
- Limitations and directions for further research (optional).
- References or bibliography.
- Annexures, such as the questionnaire.
Before binding, check that the report has
- A cover page with the learner’s name, enrolment number, the guide’s name and the approved title.
- A detailed table of contents with page numbers that match the numbered pages.
- The approved proposal, approved proforma and guide’s bio-data bound inside the volume. The guidelines say a report with these papers only stapled in will not be accepted.
- A Certificate of Originality signed and dated by both learner and guide.

Submission
Where is the finished IGNOU MBAHM project report sent?
An ODL learner sends one typed, bound A4 copy to the Registrar (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, by registered post, speed post or by hand.
The envelope should read “PROJECT REPORT-MMPP-001”. A PR number is allotted on receipt, and the report is not returned after evaluation, so a personal copy is essential. Only MBA (Online) learners submit through the LMS portal. The project evaluation fee of Rs. 500 is paid with the term-end examination form of the semester in which the learner intends to submit.
The guidelines let a report be sent at any time of the year and link it to an examination cycle by date:

The handbook states that the project course is judged on the report alone and that an overall C grade (50 per cent or above) is needed to clear a course. A viva-voce is held only if the evaluator recommends one. Limits of the sources
What do the official MBAHM documents leave unsaid?
Not specified in the official MMPP-001 material
- No fixed list of HR topics. The choice is the learner’s, subject to approval.
- No minimum word count. Only an approximate upper figure of 18,000 words is given.
- No referencing style. The guidelines ask for a reference list but do not name APA, MLA or any other style.
- No plagiarism percentage. The guidelines say only that action follows University policy if a report is found plagiarised.
- No online upload route for ODL learners. The LMS route is named for MBA (Online) learners only.
- No settled answer on medium. The Common Prospectus July 2026 lists MBAHM as English and Hindi, while the ignou.ac.in MBAHM page and the handbook say English. A learner who wants to write in Hindi should confirm with the Regional Centre first.
The March 2025 handbook prints older fees (Rs. 15,500 and Rs. 17,500) than the Common Prospectus July 2026, which carries the current figures. The Noida Regional Centre has also issued a notification on decentralised evaluation of MMPP-001 synopses; it is a scanned image, so its details should be read at the Regional Centre.

Is IGNOU MBAHM the same as IGNOU MBA HR?
Yes. MBAHM is the programme code IGNOU uses for the Master of Business Administration (Human Resource Management). Its project course is MMPP-001, the same code used by MBA, MBAFM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF, so an MBA HR project and an MBAHM project follow one set of guidelines.
Can an MBAHM learner choose a topic outside human resource management?
The MMPP-001 guidelines say the topic should preferably come from the learner's area of specialisation, which is a preference rather than a written ban. Whatever the area, the guide must be a specialist in that area, and the Regional Centre evaluator decides whether the proposal is approved.
Does an MBAHM learner have to pay the project guide?
