The distinction matters because MPATHA is a heavily practical degree. Acting Practicum, Scene Work, Technical Theatre and Class Room Play Production are all assessed as practical courses. Semester IV therefore carries 20 credits, of which the dissertation is one fifth. Because MTH-043 and MTHP-044 run together, the sensible sequence is to work through the Research Methodology material before locking a topic. Who reaches MTHP-044, and who supervises it?

Only students already admitted to MPATHA reach this course. Admission requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Arts from a recognised university or institution, or graduation in any discipline combined with a one-year Diploma in Theatre Arts or Diploma in Acting. The programme runs on a July intake with a minimum duration of two years and a maximum of four.

IGNOU does not publish a single university-wide supervisor rule that covers every programme, and the criteria differ noticeably between schools. For a performing arts dissertation the guide is normally an academic or practitioner with a postgraduate qualification in theatre or a closely related discipline, and teaching or professional standing in the field. How should the MTHP-044 dissertation be structured?

The Common Prospectus fixes the credit weight of MTHP-044 but does not prescribe a page count, so students should treat the word range as something to settle with the supervisor and the SOPVA project guide rather than copy from another programme. A 4-credit dissertation is deliberately more compact than the 8-credit dissertations found in some other IGNOU master’s degrees, and examiners generally prefer a tight, well-evidenced argument over padding.

What kind of theatre topics suit a 4-credit dissertation?

The most frequent mistake is scale. A four-credit dissertation cannot carry “the history of Indian theatre” or “the influence of Stanislavski on world acting”. Workable topics are narrow in scope but deep in evidence, and they usually have a source base the student can physically reach.

Two constraints deserve early thought. If the study involves interviews, filming or attending rehearsals, written permission must be secured and appended, and consent should be discussed with the supervisor before fieldwork begins. Second, originality is checked. Synopsis

Why does the synopsis decide the dissertation?

The synopsis is not paperwork. It is the document on which a supervisor and the School decide whether the proposed study can actually be completed at this level, and approval must be recorded in writing on the prescribed proforma before the dissertation is written. Students who begin writing before approval frequently lose an entire session, because a topic changed after approval usually requires the proposal to go back for fresh approval.

How is MTHP-044 submitted, and what happens at the viva?

IGNOU now accepts final project, dissertation and internship reports through an online route for term-end examination cycles. The approved synopsis proforma should form part of that same PDF. Reports sent only by email are not taken up for evaluation, and the synopsis or assignments must never be uploaded to the project portal in place of the report.
