Two MASO Cut-Off Dates and Which One Is Yours

The dates below were read off IGNOU’s own MASO booklet for MSO-101, published for the January 2026 and July 2026 sessions. They are the assignment last date for each admission batch, they are not the School of Management Studies dates, and they are not the dates most websites print for MA Sociology.

A great many pages state that the IGNOU MSO assignment last date is 31st May 2026, and several describe that deadline as an extension. IGNOU’s own MASO paper for MSO-101 does not print 31st May anywhere. It prints 30th September 2026 and 31st March 2027 against the two admission cycles, and the legacy MSO booklet for July 2024 and January 2025 prints the same pair one cycle earlier, 31st March 2025 and 30th September 2025. Two booklets, two cycles apart, agree with each other and disagree with the web consensus. Dates do shift by session and by Regional Centre, so confirm yours on ignou.ac.in and with the Regional Centre named on your admission record before you post anything.

There is one other thing worth knowing about timing. Assignment papers expire. The questions printed on the MSO-101 booklet belong to the January 2026 and July 2026 sessions, and the questions on the MSO-106 paper belong to July 2026 and January 2027. Writing last year’s questions out in longhand does not help however neat the handwritten pages are, which is why the session you name when ordering a handwritten assignment matters as much as the course code.

Thirty Marks a Course That Are Decided Before You Enter the Exam Hall

Assignments carry 30 per cent of the final course result and the term-end examination carries the remaining 70 per cent. On a MASO paper that is straightforward arithmetic: every course assignment is set at Maximum Marks 100 with Weightage 30% printed on the paper itself, so MSO-101 alone puts thirty marks on the table before you have read a single exam question.

Sociology makes those thirty marks unusually winnable and unusually easy to lose. The questions are descriptive rather than numerical, so there is nothing to get wrong in the way a costing sum can be wrong, and a learner who has read the blocks can write a competent answer on Radcliffe-Brown and Malinowski or on the little tradition and the great tradition. What defeats people is the sheer volume of handwritten output. A single MASO paper asks for five answers of about 500 words each, which is roughly 2,500 words in longhand per course, and a learner carrying five papers in a semester is looking at something near 12,500 handwritten words in one sitting season.

Non-submission is not a soft failure either. Where an assignment is not submitted, the course sits on the grade card as not completed, and the result stays incomplete no matter how the term-end paper went. Learners routinely finish every theory paper of MA Sociology and still cannot collect a degree because one first-year assignment was never posted. MA Sociology was restructured in line with NEP 2020, and MASO is the programme code printed in the July 2026 Common Prospectus and on the cover of every 2026 sociology booklet. Read the second-year table carefully before ordering. Only two of MSOE 113, MSOE 114 and MSOE 115 are taken in the third semester, and only one of MPSE 004, MPSE 007 and MJM 024. In the fourth semester only two of the MSOE 118 and MSOE 119 pair are taken, and each of those two codes covers a choice of paper rather than a single fixed paper, since MSOE 118 resolves to either Sociology of Food or the Anthropology course MAN 107, Environmental Anthropology, and MSOE 119 resolves to either Sociology of Health or MAN 105, Tribes in India. Two MASO learners in the same semester can therefore hold four different papers between them. That is why an order is placed by code and not by semester.

The July 2026 Common Prospectus no longer prints the legacy MSO structure as a programme, so it does not state credits for these ten courses in one place. It does still print three of them inside other programmes, and each time it does, the credit value is 8 rather than 4. If you are on the legacy MSO syllabus, take the credit value of each of your own courses off your admission record and not off the MASO table above.

That third table is worth a second look, because it is the clearest evidence that a sociology code by itself is not enough information. MSO2 and MSO 002 are the same course under two spellings, and a learner in MA Public Administration who searches for MSO2 will land on MA Sociology material written for a 4-credit MASO course that no longer resembles the 8-credit paper they hold. Send the code exactly as your admission record prints it, along with your programme code, and the ambiguity disappears before a single handwritten page is written. From the TMA Booklet to a Couriered Bundle in Five Stages

Not one handwritten page is written until the correct question paper is in hand. For MA Sociology that check matters more than usual, because the wrong syllabus generation produces a handwritten set that looks perfect and cannot be submitted.

1. Your codes and cohort are pinned down first

   You send the course codes as printed on your admission record together with your programme code. MASO with MSO-101 upwards is one route; MSO with MSO-001 upwards is the other. Where a code is ambiguous, such as an MSOE number that exists in both generations, the programme code settles it before any handwritten assignment writing starts.

   The current sociology booklet for your codes is taken from IGNOU’s own assignment path, and the assignment code, marks pattern, section structure and word limits printed on it are read off the paper rather than assumed. A MASO paper for the 2026 cycle carries a different assignment code from the same course in the 2026-27 cycle, and that difference goes onto the cover page of your handwritten set.

3. Answers are drafted to the printed marks and word limits

   A 20-mark sociology question is written to about 500 words and a 10-mark question to about 250, because those are the figures the booklet prints. Where a paper breaks the pattern, as the legacy MSO-002 does with two 25-mark questions and a 3,000-word research report at 50 marks, the answer is built to that paper’s own structure instead.

4. The handwritten set goes onto A4 sheets

   Blue or black pen, a clear left margin for evaluator comments, a fresh page for each new question, the question number carried across from the booklet, key sociological terms underlined once. Continuous handwritten prose of this length has to stay legible from the first Durkheim paragraph to the last, and that is what the handwriting is judged on internally before it goes out.

5. Cover pages go on and the bundle is couriered

Pulling Your Own MSO Question Paper From IGNOU

The assignment questions are free and public. You do not need to buy them from anyone, and checking them yourself is the cheapest way to be certain that whoever writes your handwritten assignment has the right paper.

1. Open IGNOU’s official assignment portal at the student service assignment download page on ignou.ac.in.
2. Find the Master’s Degree list and open the sociology entry. The current MASO booklets are published under the School of Social Sciences assignment path; the older programme index for MA Sociology is a separate listing.
3. Open the booklet for your course code and check the cover. It names the sessions the paper is valid for, for example January 2026 and July 2026, and prints the Programme Code as MASO or MSO.
4. Read four things off the paper before you write a handwritten answer or order anything: the assignment code, the maximum marks and weightage, the number of questions and how many you must answer, and the two submission dates in the admission-cycle table.

One warning specific to sociology. The MA Sociology programme index on the webservices path has not been refreshed past the July 2024 and January 2025 booklets, so it still lists only the legacy MSO papers. The 2026 MASO booklets exist and are published, but on a different path under ignou.ac.in. If your search lands on the older index and you conclude that no new paper has been issued for MSO-101, that is the index being stale rather than the paper being missing. Never work from a PDF link someone has typed out for you without opening it and reading the cover yourself.

Past term-end papers are a separate resource and are useful for a different reason: sociology repeats themes heavily across cycles. Following a Submitted Sociology Paper Through to the Grade Card

Handing the handwritten bundle in is not the end of it. The MASO booklet is explicit about what happens next: you must obtain a receipt from the Study Centre and retain it, keep a photocopy of the assignment, and the Study Centre returns the evaluated assignment to you and sends the marks on to the SR&E Division at IGNOU, New Delhi. Every one of those steps is a place where a paper can go missing, and the receipt is the only proof you will hold.

Status appears on IGNOU’s assignment status service against your enrolment number and programme code, and marks appear later on the grade card. The two are not the same lookup and they do not update together. Where a sociology course shows as not completed while your term-end mark is present, the missing component is almost always the assignment, and the fix is documentary rather than academic. Check the reading first on grade card status, then the consolidated view on the final grade card, and read how IGNOU’s letter grades map to marks on the IGNOU grading system page. What MASO does have is a research-heavy spine, MSO-107, MSO-108 and MSO-109 in the second semester, and an exit route into a Post Graduate Diploma in Research Methodology after that semester.
