QUICK ANSWER
The IGNOU MAPY project is MPYP-001 Dissertation/Project work, a 4-credit course in the second year of the MA Philosophy programme. The Prospectus lists it among the Year 2 electives, so you take it in place of one theory elective; it is not compulsory. IGNOU’s own MPYP 001 Student Manual defines the synopsis in five parts: provisional title, aim and objectives, chapter outline, method of procedure and available sources. The project evaluation fee is Rs 300.

Six Facts About MPYP-001 Most Pages Miss
- It is an elective. The Common Prospectus July 2026 prints “MPYP 1 Dissertation 4” inside the Year 2 list headed “Elective Courses (Choose any six)”. Pages that call it compulsory are wrong on the Prospectus.
- The fee is Rs 300, not Rs 500. IGNOU’s SED project fee page sets Rs 300 per course for projects up to 4 credits and Rs 500 above 4 credits. MPYP-001 has 4 credits.
- IGNOU has its own dissertation manual for this course. The MPYP 001 Dissertation collection on eGyanKosh holds Research in Philosophy: A Student Manual (2017): an introduction and four units.
- The manual names the synopsis parts. Unit 1 lists five: provisional title, aim and objective, outline of contents, method of procedure, and the source materials available (search-index excerpt of the official file).
- There is no assignment for MPYP-001. The MAPY Second Year assignment file for the December 2023 and June 2024 Term-End Examinations covers MPY-002 and MPYE-008 to MPYE-016 only.
- The official duration figures disagree. The MAPY programme page says 2 to 5 years in its introduction, while its own Duration section and the Prospectus say 2 to 4 years (24 to 48 months). Plan on 4.
Therefore: decide in Year 2 whether the dissertation replaces a theory elective, budget Rs 300 for its evaluation, and build the synopsis on the manual’s five parts.
हिंदी में सारांश
IGNOU MAPY प्रोजेक्ट का कोड MPYP-001 (Dissertation/Project work) है।

MPYP 001 Code Clarification and What It Means
MPYP-001, MPYP 001, MPYP 1 and MPYP-01 are the same course. The MAPY programme page lists it as “MPYP-001 Dissertation/Project work”, type Project, 4 credits, in Year 2. The Prospectus writes the same course as “MPYP 1”. In the MAPY course list, MPY-001 and MPY-002 are the two compulsory courses, MPYE-001 to MPYE-016 are the theory electives, and MPYP-001 is the only project course.
MAPY itself means Master of Arts (Philosophy), offered by IGNOU’s School of Inter-Disciplinary and Trans-Disciplinary Studies (SOITS) in English, with January and July admission and a fee of Rs 8,200 per year (Rs 16,400 in total) in the Prospectus. The programme page adds a Rs 300 registration fee. For admission, syllabus and eligibility, see our MA Philosophy (MAPY) programme overview. This page covers the dissertation only. Project pages for other IGNOU programmes are listed on our IGNOU projects hub.
The programme page states the course’s purpose plainly: to make the student philosophise by working independently with a guide on a theme, reviewing the relevant material, and presenting the ideas through a project or research paper, as a preparation for further study at MPhil and PhD level.
Six Electives in Year 2, and the Dissertation Is One Choice
The Prospectus gives MAPY 64 credits. Year 1 is MPY-001 Indian Philosophy (8 credits) plus any six 4-credit electives. Year 2 is MPY-002 Western Philosophy (8 credits) plus any six 4-credit electives, and MPYP-001 Dissertation sits inside that Year 2 elective list. So the real question is not how to pass a compulsory project but whether a dissertation should take one of your six Year 2 places.
| Year 2 component | Credits | Status in the Prospectus |
|---|---|---|
| MPY-002 Western Philosophy | 8 | Compulsory |
| MPYE-008 to MPYE-016 (nine theory electives) | 4 each | Choose any six from these and MPYP-001 |
| MPYP-001 Dissertation | 4 | Elective, counted as one of the six |
| Year 2 total | 32 | 8 compulsory plus 24 elective |
PLANNING-AID This decision table is our reading of the trade-off, not an IGNOU rule.
| Choose MPYP-001 if | Choose a sixth theory elective if |
|---|---|
| You plan an MPhil or PhD, which the programme page names as the purpose of the dissertation | You want every Year 2 course assessed by assignment and Term-End Examination |
| You can work with a supervisor over several months, as Unit 1 of the manual expects | You cannot yet name a supervisor or a library you can use |
| You already have one thinker or concept you want to study in depth | Your interest is spread across several areas |
| You can read primary texts in a good English translation and keep notes on them | You prefer course material you can revise for an exam |
OFFICIAL-RULE tool
MAPY Year Basket Checker
Tick the electives you have chosen or plan to choose. The checker applies only the course rules printed for MAPY in the IGNOU Common Prospectus July 2026 (pp. 90 to 91) and the project fee rule on p. 27.
This tool needs JavaScript. If this line is still visible after the page has loaded, the script was blocked on this page.
How it decides: the Prospectus gives MAPY 64 credits: MPY-001 (8) and six 4-credit electives in Year 1, MPY-002 (8) and six 4-credit electives in Year 2. MPYP-001 Dissertation appears inside the Year 2 list of electives, so ticking it uses one of your six Year 2 places. If MPYP-001 is ticked, the checker adds the Rs 300 project evaluation fee rule for projects up to 4 credits, paid with the Term-End Examination form by learners admitted from the January 2023 admission cycle onwards. It does not check eligibility, re-registration or dates.
What IGNOU’s Own Dissertation Manual Covers
The MPYP 001 Dissertation collection on eGyanKosh is the course’s own guide: Research in Philosophy: A Student Manual, published by IGNOU in 2017 with units by V. John Peter. Download all five files from the eGyanKosh collection before you choose a topic. The table shows what each part covers, as far as we could verify it.
| File | What it covers | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Introduction | Title only verified: Research in Philosophy, A Student Manual | Read first; check it for any MPYP-001 form, length or submission rule |
| Unit 1. Systematic Research in Philosophy | Research in philosophy, philosophical method, tools of research, choosing a topic, and the synopsis (search-index excerpt) | Topic choice, supervisor, synopsis |
| Unit 2. Material Collection and Notes Taking | Title verified; contents not read | Reading and note-taking plan |
| Unit 3. Writing a Research Paper | Developing the writing skill, the main divisions of a paper, acknowledging sources, citation, footnotes, bibliography in Turabian and APA style, a sample bibliography (search-index excerpt) | Report structure and referencing |
| Unit 4. Presentation of Research Paper | Title verified; contents not read | Final presentation of the work |
Unit 1 also points learners back to the first-year Research Methodology course. That is MPYE-007 Research Methodology in Philosophy, a Year 1 elective whose recent Term-End paper asks about dialectics as a method, the main divisions of a paper, the fusion of horizons and the semantic autonomy of the text. The documents we read do not make MPYE-007 a prerequisite for MPYP-001, but a learner who skipped it should read its blocks before drafting.
IGNOU MAPY Project Topics Built From Your Own Courses
IGNOU does not publish an MPYP-001 topic list in any document we read. Unit 1 of the manual treats choosing a topic as part of the research itself. The safest source of a topic is a problem you have already met in your own MAPY courses, because you know its texts and its debates. Each row below starts from a question IGNOU itself set in a MAPY assignment or Term-End paper.
PLANNING-AID The topic directions are our suggestions. Narrow any of them with your supervisor.
| Course | Concept IGNOU has set | Where IGNOU set it | Topic direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| MPY-001 Indian Philosophy | Nyāya inference and the Cārvāka rejection of inference | MAPY First Year assignment, TEE December 2020 and June 2021 | Can inference survive the Cārvāka critique? Vyāpti in Nyāya re-examined |
| MPY-001 Indian Philosophy | Abhāva as a Vaiśeṣika category | Assignment for TEE December 2023 and June 2024; TEE December 2016 | Is absence real? The Vaiśeṣika category of abhāva and its critics |
| MPY-001 Indian Philosophy | Syādvāda and anekāntavāda of Jainism | Assignment for TEE December 2023 and June 2024; TEE December 2021 | Syādvāda as a logic of standpoints: coherence and limits |
| MPY-001 Indian Philosophy | Rasa-utpatti-vāda of Bhaṭṭa Lollaṭa | TEE December 2021 | Where does rasa arise? Bhaṭṭa Lollaṭa’s answer examined |
| MPY-001 Indian Philosophy | Ambedkar’s view of religion and his turn to Buddhism | TEE June 2013, December 2016 and December 2021 | Religion as morality: Ambedkar’s reading of Buddhism |
| MPYE-004 Philosophy of Human Person | Participation in Marcel; the I-It relation in Buber | Assignment for TEE December 2023 and June 2024 | Participation and encounter: Marcel and Buber compared |
| MPYE-007 Research Methodology | Fusion of horizons; hermeneutical circle | TEE June and December 2022 | Reading a classical Indian text across a fusion of horizons |
Our sample synopsis takes a comparative route: Dignāga’s exclusion theory of word meaning set against Frege’s sense and reference. The planner below helps you turn any of these directions into a working title and chapter plan.

Philosophy Dissertation Argument Planner
Pick a method, name your thinker or text and your concept. The planner returns a working title, a central question, three sub-questions and a five-chapter skeleton that fits the method. Take it to your guide as a starting draft.
This tool needs JavaScript. If this line is still visible after the page has loaded, the script was blocked on this page.
How it decides: each method has one fixed pattern for the title, the question, the sub-questions and the chapters, and the planner fills in your thinker and concept. The six methods are those examined in the MPYE-007 Research Methodology in Philosophy Term-End papers (analytic, hermeneutic, phenomenological, dialectical, comparative and critical approaches). IGNOU does not prescribe any one method for MPYP-001, and the planner does not judge whether a topic will be approved.
IGNOU MAPY Synopsis Writing: Step-by-Step Structure
Unit 1 of the MPYP 001 Student Manual describes the synopsis as an abstract of the topic and lists what it consists of: a provisional title, the aim and objective of the research, an outline of the contents, the method of procedure, and the source materials available. The same unit describes dividing the topic into chapters and sub-titles and preparing a working bibliography of the books and articles, and it treats the schema, the synopsis and the bibliography together as the preliminary work of research. Build your synopsis in that order.
| Step | Part named in Unit 1 | What to write | Common slip in philosophy synopses |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Provisional title | Thinker or text, concept, and the form of the study (analytic, comparative, critical) | A title that names a whole tradition and promises a survey |
| 2 | Aim and objective of the research | One aim and three or four objectives, each answerable from texts | Objectives that ask for opinions or data a text cannot give |
| 3 | Outline of the contents | Chapters with sub-titles, from introduction to conclusion | Chapters that summarise thinkers but never test the argument |
| 4 | Method of procedure | How you will read, reconstruct, compare or evaluate the arguments | Copying survey-research language (sample, questionnaire) into a text-based study |
| 5 | Source materials available | Primary texts with the edition or translation, then secondary studies, then where you can consult them | Listing works never read, or no translation details |
Unit 1 is direct about the supervisor’s role at this stage: consult the supervisor, leave enough time for the supervisor to correct and guide, and carry out the corrections carefully. The manual does not, in the parts we could read, give a word limit for the synopsis.
For general synopsis format across IGNOU programmes, see our IGNOU synopsis and proposal guide.
A Second Reading for Your MPYP-001 Draft
A philosophy synopsis fails quietly: the title promises a survey, the method borrows survey language, and the sources list works the writer never opened. IGNOU has published no MPYP-001 rejection list in the documents we read, so we check your own draft against what the course’s manual itself asks for, mark every problem and return it with corrections.
What we check in your synopsis
- All five parts from Unit 1 present, in order
- Title names the thinker, the concept and the form of study
- Objectives that a reading of texts can answer
- A method of procedure suited to philosophy, not borrowed from surveys
- Primary sources with edition or translation, and a working bibliography in one style
What we check in your report
- Preliminaries, main body and reference material, as Unit 3 divides a report
- Every quotation and borrowed idea acknowledged
- Footnotes and bibliography in one style (Turabian or APA, as Unit 3 explains)
- Chapters that follow the outline of your approved synopsis
- Title identical on the synopsis and the report
Correction charge: Rs 1,000 for a synopsis, Rs 2,000 for a dissertation report.
See how the correction service worksAsk on WhatsAppYou remain the author of your synopsis and report. Your supervisor guides the work, and IGNOU’s evaluator decides on it; no one outside IGNOU can promise approval.
The MPYP-001 Proforma: What Is and Is Not Verified
Many IGNOU project courses use a printed proposal proforma with boxes for the learner and the guide. For MPYP-001 we could not verify one.
What we checked on 07 October 2026
- The eGyanKosh MPYP 001 Dissertation collection lists five files: the manual’s introduction and Units 1 to 4. None of them is titled as a form or proforma.
- The MAPY programme page and the Common Prospectus July 2026 mention no MPYP-001 proforma.
- The Introduction and Units 2 and 4 of the manual could not be read, so a form or a submission rule inside them cannot be ruled out.
What to do: read the manual’s Introduction yourself, then ask your Regional Centre whether MPYP-001 uses a proforma and where the synopsis goes. If they give you a form, fill the learner’s boxes yourself and leave the supervisor’s boxes, signature and remarks to the supervisor. Do not use another programme’s proforma (for example an MAEDU or MBA form) for MPYP-001; the course codes and fields differ.
Guide/Supervisor Selection and Eligibility for MPYP 001
Two official statements bear on the supervisor. The MAPY programme page says the student works out a theme independently with the help of a guide. Unit 1 of the manual tells the learner to make sure of a competent supervisor, to consult the supervisor, to allow enough time for corrections and to carry them out carefully, and it says the choice of a supervisor needs care.
What the documents we read do not state: the qualifications a supervisor for MPYP-001 must hold, whether the Regional Centre allots a supervisor or the learner proposes one, and any honorarium. One learner wrote in a comment on this page that they had opted for the dissertation in Year 2 and had not yet been connected to a supervisor, which shows how unclear this step can be. Ask your Regional Centre in writing, early in Year 2, and keep the reply.
IGNOU MAPY Dissertation Format: Three Parts of a Report
Unit 3 of the manual (search-index excerpt) says a research report generally has three parts: the preliminaries, such as the title page, acknowledgements and table of contents; the text or main body; and the reference material, such as appendices and bibliography. The same unit explains acknowledging source materials, citation, writing footnotes and endnotes, and bibliography in the Turabian and APA styles, with a sample bibliography.
| Part | Contents | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Preliminaries | Title page, acknowledgements, table of contents | Unit 3 of the manual |
| Main body | Introduction, the chapters of your approved outline, conclusion | Unit 3; chapter plan from your synopsis |
| Reference material | Appendices (if any) and bibliography | Unit 3 of the manual |
| Declaration and supervisor certificate | Wording and placement | Not stated in what we read: confirm with your Regional Centre |
| Length, paper, spacing, copies, binding | Physical format | Not stated in what we read: confirm with your Regional Centre |
Some pages on other sites give MPYP-001 a fixed length of 10,000 to 15,000 words or about 100 pages, or tell learners to bring project source code to a viva. We found no IGNOU document that says so for MPYP-001, and source code has no place in a philosophy dissertation.
For the binding and page-order conventions that apply across IGNOU projects, see the IGNOU project guidelines page, and for how dissertations differ from project reports across programmes, our thesis and dissertation report guide.
Rs 300 With the Exam Form: Fee and Submission
IGNOU’s SED project fee page states that from the January 2023 admission cycle the University charges a project evaluation fee: Rs 300 per course for projects up to 4 credits and Rs 500 above 4 credits. MPYP-001 has 4 credits, so the fee is Rs 300. The Prospectus (p. 27) adds that the fee is paid with the Term-End Examination form and is not refunded or adjusted once paid. Check the current exam form before paying, because fee notices change.
The documents we read do not give an MPYP-001 submission address or a viva rule. For the general submission process, see our IGNOU project submission guide; after you submit, track it with the project status guide. For the theory courses of MAPY, which do have assignments, see MAPY assignments.
FAQs on IGNOU MAPY Dissertation Project for MPYP 001
Is MPYP-001 compulsory in IGNOU MAPY?
No. The Common Prospectus July 2026 lists MPYP 1 Dissertation (4 credits) inside the Year 2 list of electives, from which a learner chooses any six. You can complete MAPY without it.
What is the IGNOU MAPY project fee?
Rs 300, the project evaluation fee for projects up to 4 credits, for learners admitted from the January 2023 admission cycle onwards. It is paid with the Term-End Examination form and is not refundable (SED project fee page; Prospectus p. 27).
What should an MPYP-001 synopsis contain?
Unit 1 of the MPYP 001 Student Manual lists five parts: a provisional title, the aim and objective of the research, an outline of the contents (chapters and sub-titles), the method of procedure, and the source materials available, with a working bibliography.
Where do I send the MPYP-001 synopsis and report?
The documents we read do not give an address for MPYP-001. Ask your Regional Centre, and read the manual’s Introduction, which we could not read. Keep proof of dispatch and any receipt.
Is there a sample MAPY synopsis?
Yes, as study reference: our watermarked sample synopsis follows the manual’s five parts on a fresh comparative topic. It shows structure only and must not be submitted.
How long should the MAPY dissertation be?
No length is stated in the IGNOU documents we read for MPYP-001. Figures on other sites are not sourced to IGNOU. Ask your supervisor and Regional Centre.
Can I write the MAPY dissertation in Hindi?
The Prospectus says MAPY is offered in English and that Term-End Examination answers may be written in Hindi. It says nothing about the dissertation’s language, so confirm with your Regional Centre before you start.
What does MAPY mean in IGNOU?
Master of Arts (Philosophy), a 64-credit programme of IGNOU’s School of Inter-Disciplinary and Trans-Disciplinary Studies.

February 27, 2021Respected sir/madam,
(Myself, Ms. Sneha Hattangadi, IGNOU Student, Enrollment ID – 195558511, MAPY student.)
I have re-registered myself in July 2020 for MAPY Year 2 & would be giving my Year 2 TEE in June 2021. I would appreciate if you could let me know the deadline for submission of my IGNOU assignments.
Since I have opted for Dissertation as one of my subjects in Year 2 MAPY, I will need to know the guidelines for my Dissertation Project. As per IGNOU instructions, students would be connected to a specific supervisor or guide for the project work. However, I have not received any such information. Since very little time is left for the examinations and submissions, I request you to kindly help me with the details about the Dissertation Project at the earliest possible.
Looking forward to your immediate response.
Thank you.
