Quick answer. IGNOU MAHD books are the official Hindi self-learning blocks for the MA Hindi, which IGNOU posts to each learner and keeps free on eGyanKosh under the older code MHD. The July 2026 Common Prospectus prints 23 MHD course codes for the Master of Arts (Hindi): five compulsory 8-credit papers in Year I, two compulsory 4-credit papers in Year II, and four elective modules of four 4-credit papers each, of which a learner takes two, so every learner studies 15 courses worth 80 credits. Shri Chakradhar Publication prepares a complete course book for each of the 23 codes, holding the chapters, the latest previous years’ solved papers and the important questions and answers, at ₹249 per book as a hard copy or ₹99 per book as a soft copy (PDF), with one fixed ₹100 delivery charge on a hard-copy order however many books it holds. MAHD is taught in Hindi only, so every book is a Hindi-medium edition, and every order is placed on WhatsApp at +91 93546 37830.
When Are the MHD Papers in the December 2026 Term-End Examination?
IGNOU’s tentative date sheet for December 2026, revised on 14 September 2026, runs from 25 November 2026 to 13 January 2027, and the 23 MHD papers are spread across December and January. The Year II module papers come first. The Year I papers, which carry 8 credits each, sit in the last fortnight of the window.
MHD dates in the tentative December 2026 sheet
Year II codes. MHD-01 on 7 December 2026. The module papers fall on 18, 19, 21 and 22 December, except MHD-09 on 9 January and MHD-12 on 12 January 2027. MHD-07 sits on 7 January 2027.
Year I codes. MHD-02 on 4 January, MHD-05 on 5 January, MHD-03 on 6 January, MHD-04 on 8 January and MHD-06 on 11 January 2027.
Four module papers share each of the December dates. MHD-13, MHD-17 and MHD-21 are printed against 18 December; MHD-10, MHD-14, MHD-18 and MHD-22 against 19 December; MHD-11, MHD-15, MHD-19 and MHD-23 against 21 December; and MHD-16, MHD-20 and MHD-24 against 22 December. A learner who registered two modules will usually have two papers on each of those days, so check the session printed beside each code on the tentative December 2026 date sheet PDF and follow revisions on the course-code date sheet search. How Many Hours Does the MA Hindi Syllabus Ask For?
The MA Hindi asks for 2,400 hours of study across two years, split evenly: 1,200 hours in Year I and 1,200 hours in Year II. IGNOU’s Common Prospectus for July 2026 counts one credit as 30 hours of learner study, so a 4-credit course carries 120 hours and a 6-credit course 180 hours. An 8-credit MHD paper therefore carries 240 hours.
The totals match. The shape does not, and that is what catches Year II learners off guard.
Year I, before the switch
Five papers, MHD-02 to MHD-06, each 8 credits and 240 hours. One book per paper, five books in all, and five examination dates, all of them in January 2027 on the current tentative sheet.
Year II, after the switch
Ten papers, each 4 credits and 120 hours: MHD-01, MHD-07 and the eight papers of two modules. The same 1,200 hours are cut into twice as many books and twice as many examination scripts.
IGNOU issues printed study material either as a single book of blocks and units or as separate blocks for every course, on an average one block per credit, and a block usually comprises 3 to 5 units. MHD-06, the history of Hindi language and literature, fits that rule exactly: its eGyanKosh collection holds eight blocks, from the introduction to literary history and the Adikal through to the development of the Hindi language, for its 8 credits. A learner planning Year II should expect shorter courses but more of them, and should budget revision time per paper rather than per year.
Official MHD Blocks, a Help Book or a Free PDF: What Each One Is For
The official MHD blocks come first, because IGNOU sets every MA Hindi paper from them. Official study material, which IGNOU calls self-learning material (SLM), is the university’s own content for each course code, issued in blocks that usually hold 3 to 5 units each; IGNOU posts it to the learner unless the soft-copy option was chosen at admission, and anyone can read it free on eGyanKosh. A help book, also called a guide book, is an independent publisher’s revision volume that condenses a course for the term-end examination; it is not an IGNOU publication. A free PDF is legitimate only when it is IGNOU’s own material from egyankosh.ac.in or the IGNOU e-Content app.

Official study material is linked here only at egyankosh.ac.in, and this page does not host or redistribute IGNOU’s files. Sites that repackage MHD blocks as zip bundles or “combined PDFs” cannot show which edition a file came from, and at least one of them lists an MHD-08 download for a code the current table does not contain.
Whether a help book is worth buying at all depends on the checks anyone should run, whoever the publisher is: the codes must match your admission record, the edition must follow the 80-credit MAHD table rather than the older 64-credit MHD one, the medium must be Hindi, and the book should not promise marks or questions it cannot control. Chapters in the order of the blocks. Each MHD course book follows its course’s own block sequence, so a reader of MHD-06 moves from literary history into the language chapters the way the official blocks do.
Solved papers from recent sessions. The latest previous years’ solved papers show how MHD questions are framed, including the short-note sections that ask for टिप्पणियाँ on two of the listed topics.
Important questions with answers. Answers are written in the register a Hindi literature examiner expects, with quotations placed where an answer on a poet or novelist needs them.
One book for each code. A Year I learner orders five books; a Year II learner orders ten. Nobody pays for a module they did not register.
Prescribed texts kept in view. Courses such as MHD-03 and MHD-14 are built around named novels, so the chapters stay tied to those texts rather than drifting into general surveys.
Module books sold separately. The four Year II modules, कहानी, उपन्यास, दलित साहित्य and मध्यकालीन कविता, are priced book by book, so choosing two of them never means buying all four.
Titles as the prospectus prints them. Where eGyanKosh adds “विविधा” to MHD-11 and MHD-12, the book is still listed under the prospectus title your examination form uses.
Shared first-year codes. MHD-01 to MHD-04 and MHD-06 also sit in the MA Hindi Vyavsayik Lekhan (MAHV) table, so the same five books serve a learner on either programme.
Theory papers treated as theory. MHD-05 on literary theory and criticism and MHD-07 on linguistics are written with definitions and schools set out plainly, since those papers reward exact terms.
Hindi throughout. Questions, answers and chapter headings are in Hindi, matching the only medium IGNOU lists for MAHD.
Codes checked before payment. The list sent on WhatsApp is matched against your registration, so a book for the wrong module or an old MHD code is not sold to you.
Print or PDF, per book. The two formats are priced differently and can be mixed within one year’s set if a learner wants some courses on paper and others on a phone.

The July 2026 Common Prospectus lists 23 MHD course codes for MAHD, worth 112 credits between them, and a learner completes 15 of them for the 80 credits the degree requires. The sum checks: 5 papers of 8 credits make 40 credits in Year I, and MHD-01 and MHD-07 at 4 credits each plus two modules of four 4-credit papers make 40 credits in Year II. Hours below are the prospectus’s own conversion of 30 hours per credit.

One programme, three codes. The prospectus calls the programme MAHD. eGyanKosh files every block under “Master of Arts (Hindi) (MHD)”. IGNOU’s online programme page for MHDOL still describes a 64-credit programme and gives its maximum duration as five years in one line and four years in another, while the July 2026 prospectus prints 80 credits for MAHD.
MHD-05 changes year. The prospectus places MHD-05 among the five compulsory Year I papers, but its eGyanKosh collection sits under “2nd Year”. Follow the prospectus; the blocks are the same.
Titles differ by source. The MAHD table prints MHD-01 as हिंदी काव्य-1, while the MAHV table and eGyanKosh give the full title with आदि काव्य, भक्ति एवं रीति काव्य. eGyanKosh titles MHD-11 as हिन्दी कहानी विविधा and files MHD-12 twice, once as भारतीय कहानी and once as भारतीय कहानी विविधा.
Semester wording on a year-wise course. A SWAYAM listing for MHD-03 describes it as a first-semester course. MAHD is examined year-wise, and the prospectus lists no semesters for it.
No MHD-08. The current table jumps from MHD-07 to MHD-09. Download lists elsewhere that offer an MHD-08 file are describing a code the July 2026 table does not print.
In-house. An older 2022 page from Shri Chakradhar Publication still describes the MA Hindi as a 64-credit programme. This page follows the July 2026 prospectus, and the older page is queued for correction.
Learners on the MAHV programme will find MHD-01, MHD-02, MHD-03, MHD-04 and MHD-06 in their own first-year table, where MHD-01 is a first-year paper rather than a second-year one; the course books for those five codes are the same books.
Year I and Year II: Which MHD Books Each Year Needs
A Year I learner needs five MHD books and a Year II learner needs ten, and only the Year II set changes with the learner’s choices. MAHD is examined year-wise, so the books group by year rather than by semester. The complete course book covers one course code with its chapters, the latest previous years’ solved papers and the important questions and answers; the semester-wise Last Minute Exam Guide covers a whole semester at ₹249 with the important questions and answers only. The site has not published a Last Minute Exam Guide page for the year-wise MA Hindi, so the course books below are the MA Hindi product.
Year I: Five Compulsory 8-Credit Papers
MHD-02, MHD-03, MHD-04, MHD-05 and MHD-06 are compulsory, so every Year I learner orders the same five books, in Hindi, with nothing to choose. Five hard copies cost 5 × ₹249 + ₹100 = ₹1,345; five soft copies cost 5 × ₹99 = ₹495.
Year II: Two Compulsory Papers and Two Modules
MHD-01 and MHD-07 are compulsory, and the other eight books come from whichever two modules the learner registered. Ten hard copies cost 10 × ₹249 + ₹100 = ₹2,590; ten soft copies cost ₹990.

Six module pairs are possible. A learner in Module 1 with any other module gets a lighter December, because two of the short-story papers move into January. A learner in two of Modules 2, 3 and 4 faces four examination days between 18 and 22 December with two papers on each, which is where a printed book per paper earns its place. Registering modules happens at re-registration, which the IGNOU re-registration form walkthrough explains.
When the Printed MHD Blocks Do Not Arrive
When MHD blocks are late, check dispatch first, then write to MPDD, and read the same blocks on eGyanKosh while you wait. IGNOU names no dispatch period, and its prospectus states that the university shall not be held responsible for material a learner does not receive.

Hindi Medium, the MHD Code and the Move to MAHD
MAHD is taught and examined in Hindi only: the Medium column of the July 2026 prospectus summary list names Hindi alone for the Master of Arts (Hindi). The complete course book is prepared in each medium IGNOU offers for the programme, and your medium is confirmed with your course codes on WhatsApp. For MAHD that means one medium, Hindi.
Myth: an English edition of the MHD books exists. Fact: the prospectus lists no English medium for MAHD, so neither IGNOU’s blocks nor the course books come in English.
Myth: MHD and MAHD are two programmes with two sets of books. Fact: IGNOU’s admission portal describes MAHD as the 64-credit MA Hindi expanded to 80 credits under a new programme code, available from the January 2026 admission session. The course codes still begin with MHD, and the books follow the codes.
Myth: the online MA Hindi uses the same 80-credit table. Fact: the MHDOL page on IGNOU’s online programmes portal still states 64 credits. An online learner should read the course list on their own registration before ordering anything.
Myth: blocks filed under “MHD” on eGyanKosh are out of date. Fact: they are the official collections for the same codes. What matters is the code on your record, and that MHD-05 is read in Year I even though eGyanKosh files it with the second year.
A learner holding an older MA Hindi guide should check it against the 80-credit table above. A book written when MHD-01 carried a different credit value or sat in a different year may still cover the same course, but its revision plan will not match the current papers.

Suits a learner who annotates long answers on poets and novels by hand. If the papers are four weeks away and the set is ten Year II books, the PDF arrives without courier time and costs less. If the set is five Year I books read over months, print is easier on the eyes and the ₹100 is spread across five books. A mixed order is allowed: print for the 8-credit papers, PDF for a module.

IGNOU’s own MA Hindi blocks are free on eGyanKosh, where they sit in the MHD collection, and in the IGNOU e-Content app. Each course has its own collection, linked from the code table on this page. The course books sold here are a paid publication with a ₹99 soft copy per book, which is a different thing from IGNOU’s free material.
Check the study material status page that the July 2026 prospectus prints, then write to the Registrar, MPDD, at mpdd@ignou.ac.in with your enrolment number. Read the same MHD blocks on eGyanKosh while the complaint is open. IGNOU names no dispatch period.
MAHD is the current code of IGNOU’s MA Hindi, the 80-credit programme that replaced the 64-credit MHD for admissions from January 2026. The course codes still start with MHD, so the blocks and the course books carry MHD codes for both.
A MAHD learner needs 15 course books across two years: five in Year I and ten in Year II. Year II adds MHD-01, MHD-07 and both of your modules.

Each MHD complete course book holds that course’s chapters, the latest previous years’ solved papers and the important questions and answers, all in Hindi. One book covers one code, so MHD-14 and MHD-15 are two separate books.
An MHD course book costs ₹249 as a hard copy or ₹99 as a soft copy. A printed order adds one ₹100 delivery charge in total, so five Year I books cost ₹1,345 in print or ₹495 as PDFs.
Yes, the official MHD blocks on eGyanKosh are the full syllabus, and IGNOU sets its papers from them. A course book condenses the same syllabus for revision; it does not replace the blocks.
A help book is optional for MAHD and most useful in the last weeks before a paper. Read the official blocks first, then decide per course, for instance for a heavy paper like MHD-06 or a theory paper like MHD-05.
IGNOU’s tentative date sheet puts the first MHD paper, MHD-01, on 7 December 2026 and the last, MHD-12, on 12 January 2027. Year I papers fall between 4 and 11 January 2027. Confirm your own codes on the latest sheet.
No, the July 2026 MAHD table has no MHD-08. The codes run from MHD-01 to MHD-07 and then from MHD-09 to MHD-24, so a download or book labelled MHD-08 does not match the current programme.
eGyanKosh still files MHD-05 with the second-year collections, while the July 2026 prospectus makes it a compulsory Year I paper for MAHD. The blocks are the same, so study MHD-05 in Year I as the prospectus says.
Yes, a Year II module can be changed within 30 days of the first course material reaching you. For a 4-credit Master’s course the fee is Rs 600 per course, and the request goes through your Regional Centre.
MAHV learners use the same books for MHD-01, MHD-02, MHD-03, MHD-04 and MHD-06, because those codes sit in both programme tables. MHD-05 belongs to the MAHD table only.
The complete course book covers one MHD code with chapters, solved papers and important questions and answers. The Last Minute Exam Guide is a separate semester-wise volume of important questions and answers only, and the site has no such guide for the year-wise MA Hindi.
MHDOL learners study MHD-coded courses too, but IGNOU’s online portal still describes MHDOL as 64 credits. Send the course list from your own registration, and the books are matched to those codes.
MHD soft copies are sent on WhatsApp once the order is confirmed, and printed books are dispatched by courier the next day. The tracking ID comes on WhatsApp, and no delivery date is promised.
