Which finance courses come before and after the MBAFM synopsis?
Accounting and core financial management are finished by Semester 3; four finance electives run alongside MMPP-001; four more arrive only in Semester 4.
A common assumption is that the MBAFM project belongs to the final semester. The official structure says otherwise. The MBAFM Student Handbook lists seven courses per semester, and in Semester 3 those seven are MMPC-015, MMPC-016, four finance specialisation courses and MMPP-001, which is registered as one course but weighs as two. The Handbook also explains why Semester 3 costs Rs 18,000 against Rs 16,000 for the other semesters: that semester carries the 8-credit project.

The practical meaning is about reading load, not permission. The MMPP-001 guidelines only ask for a topic preferably from the learner’s area of specialisation, and they do not restrict a finance learner to courses already studied. Still, a synopsis on working capital, capital budgeting, management control or financial services rests on Semester 3 courses that the learner is reading at that moment, while a synopsis on portfolio construction or equity valuation leans on MMPF-004 and MMPF-007, which arrive only in Semester 4. Two further rules sit behind the ledger. The Common Prospectus July 2026 states that a learner enrolled in a specialisation MBA cannot change the specialisation, so the MBAFM project stays a finance project. Proforma
How does a finance topic show up on the MMPP-001 proforma?
Through two entries: the Subject Area line, which the guidelines illustrate with Finance, and the supervisor details, which should point to a specialist in finance.
The Proforma for Approval of Project Proposal (MMPP-001) asks for the enrolment number, study centre, Regional Centre, subject area, the learner’s postal and email address, the topic, the supervisor’s name and address, whether the supervisor is an IGNOU academic counsellor of the Management Programme, and the number of students that supervisor is already guiding. The Project Proposal Number is left blank because the Regional Centre assigns it.
The MMPP-001 guidelines use a finance example to explain the Subject Area line: a project on the financial performance of a company would show Finance. The same paragraph then lists the areas as HRM and OB, Accounting and Finance, Operations Management and Information System, Marketing, Corporate Management, or Any Other. IGNOU does not say which of the two wordings, Finance or Accounting and Finance, it prefers; both name the same area.

The guide rules themselves are short. The MMPP-001 guidelines accept SOMS management faculty at IGNOU headquarters, approved academic counsellors of the Management Programme with relevant experience, management faculty with 5 years of postgraduate teaching, and professionals holding a Master’s degree in management or an allied discipline with at least 5 years in the relevant area. For a finance topic the guidelines advise a finance specialist, and they ask guides to restrict themselves to their core area. A guide may supervise at most five learners at a time and receives a token honorarium of Rs 500 from IGNOU. The guide’s detailed bio-data, signed in original and dated, goes with the synopsis unless the guide is an approved counsellor. Synopsis
How should the five synopsis parts read for a finance study?
The MMPP-001 guidelines ask for exactly five parts: Introduction, Rationale, Objectives, Research Methodology and Limitations.
The guidelines call Objectives the most important part, and their own sample objective opens with the words “To study the financial performance”. They also ask that objectives stay neutral, without any built-in assumption about what the study will find. For Research Methodology they list six items: the research design, the nature and source of data, the sample and sampling technique with the reason for choosing the organisation, the data collection tools and their link to the objectives, the method of collection, and the statistical tools with their relevance to the objectives.

The company name and figures above are illustrative only. The guidelines do not list a timeline, expected outcomes or a bibliography among the five parts; a learner may add them, but they are not part of the required structure. When does the synopsis go, and what comes back?
An ODL learner of MBAFM sends the proforma, one copy of the synopsis and the guide’s bio-data to the Regional Director of the learner’s own Regional Centre, with “MMPP-001” written on the envelope; MBA (Online) learners use the LMS portal instead. The guidelines accept proposals throughout the year but only after MMPP-001 registration, aiming to leave 8 to 9 months for the study before Semester 4 ends. If a proposal reaches the Regional Centre more than 6 months after registration, the Regional Centre does not take responsibility for timely disposal.
A complete proposal receives a Project Proposal (PP) Number. The written decision should reach the learner within two to three months of receipt. A non-approved proposal goes back with the evaluator’s comments, and the revised version must carry a fresh proforma, the rejected proposal with comments, and the PP Number. Several Regional Centres, including Noida, Hyderabad and Jaipur, have posted notices on decentralised submission and evaluation of MMPP-001 synopses, so the learner should read the notice on the own Regional Centre’s website. One timing rule catches late finishers. The maximum duration of the MBAFM programme is 4 years; a learner past that limit must seek re-admission before sending a synopsis, and a synopsis approved on the old enrolment number has to be approved again on the new one.

What does a finished MBAFM report contain? A worked example
About 50 to 60 double-spaced A4 pages, not exceeding roughly 18,000 words excluding appendices, arranged in the eight parts that the MMPP-001 guidelines list and bound together with the approved proposal.
The example below follows one illustrative case study, “Working Capital Management of XYZ Ltd: A Five-Year Study, 2021-22 to 2025-26”, through each official part. A comprehensive case study of one organisation is the first of the three study types that the guidelines allow; the other two are an inter-organisational study and a field study.

Around these eight parts the guidelines require a cover page with the learner’s name, enrolment number, the guide’s name and the title; a detailed table of contents with page numbers that match the pages; the approved proposal, approved proforma and guide’s bio-data properly bound in, since a stapled proposal is not accepted; and a Certificate of Originality signed and dated by the learner and the guide. A report missing any of these goes back to the learner for compliance. The ODL learner sends one typed, bound copy to the Registrar (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, marked “PROJECT REPORT-MMPP-001”, and quotes the PR Number allotted on receipt in later letters. IGNOU does not return the report, so the learner keeps a copy. How does IGNOU evaluate MMPP-001?
The MBAFM Student Handbook states that the project course is evaluated only on the report. A viva-voce happens only if the evaluator recommends one. The Handbook sets a C grade, equal to 50 to 59.9 per cent, as the minimum to clear a course, and it rules out both re-evaluation of project reports and improvement of marks in projects. The Rs 500 project evaluation fee is paid with the term-end examination form of the semester in which the learner plans to submit the report.

What does IGNOU not specify for the MBAFM project?
Font, margins, an abstract, a word-count tolerance, file names and a topic list are all absent from the MMPP-001 guidelines.
The MMPP-001 guidelines ask for A-4 size, typed, double-spaced text in a bound volume. They do not state:
- a font face, a font size or margin widths;
- an abstract or executive summary, or a length for one;
- a percentage for the “rational variation” they allow around the 18,000-word figure;
- a page count for the synopsis, a minimum sample size or a minimum number of years of financial data;
- a file-naming format for ODL learners, who submit a hard copy;
- a list of approved finance topics.
Any figure printed for these points comes from a style choice, not from MMPP-001. The learner should settle them with the guide and follow any instruction from the Regional Centre. Is the IGNOU MBAFM project code different from the MBA project code?
No. The IGNOU MBAFM project uses MMPP-001, the same 8-credit project course that the MMPP-001 guidelines list for MBA, MBAHM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF learners. The finance specialisation shows through the topic, the Subject Area entry on the proforma and the guide's area of expertise.
Can an MBAFM learner send the synopsis before Semester 3?
The MMPP-001 guidelines accept a synopsis at any time of the year, but only after the learner has registered for MMPP-001. The MBAFM Student Handbook and Prospectus (January 2026) places MMPP-001 in Semester 3, so the synopsis follows that registration.
Does an MBAFM project need primary data?
