MASO Paper Dates in December 2026: MSO-101 Opens on 26 November

The first MASO paper is MSO-101 on Thursday 26 November 2026 and the last is the legacy MSO-004 paper on Tuesday 12 January 2027, per IGNOU’s tentative date sheet printed on 21 September 2026.

IGNOU’s tentative December 2026 term-end date sheet names MASO in its list of programmes and runs the whole cycle from 25 November 2026 to 13 January 2027. Discrepancy reports to datesheet@ignou.ac.in were accepted only until 25 September 2026. The sheet prints codes without hyphens (MSO101, MSOE01), and the session of each code is read from the column it sits in.

Two different timetables sit inside one programme. The ten codes of the semester structure all fall in the evening session, one every second or third day, from MSO-101 on 26 November to MSOE-110 on 17 December; no two of them share a date. The legacy codes arrive later and in a different slot: MSOE-001, MSOE-002 and MSOE-003 on three consecutive mornings, 7 to 9 December, then the four legacy core papers in January, all in the evening.

Three Elective Mornings in a Row for Legacy Learners

• 7, 8 and 9 December: MSOE-001, MSOE-002 and MSOE-003, morning session each day, per the sheet. A second-year learner registered for all three has no gap day between them.
• 18 and 19 December: MSOE-004 in the morning, then MPA-016 in the evening of the next day, for learners who took the Public Administration option in the legacy second year.
• 8 December: MSOE-002 (morning) and MSO-106 (evening) share a date. The two belong to different structures, so a learner holding both is rare; anyone who is should raise it with the Regional Centre.

Why the Three-Hour MSO Paper Counts for More Than the TMA

The term-end examination carries 70 per cent of the final course result and assignments carry the remaining 30 per cent.

IGNOU’s MSO-101 assignment for the January 2026 batch prints “Weightage: 30%” on its cover, which fixes the assignment side for the new codes. None of the seventeen MSO question papers prints a weightage line of its own. Length is where learners lose the term-end share: a 20-mark MSO answer is expected to run to about 500 words, and a paper of five 200-word answers leaves most of the 100 marks untouched. Once the assignment and term-end marks are both declared, the IGNOU percentage calculator works out the combined figure.

This guide gives no pass mark for MASO, because section 3.20 of the July 2026 Common Prospectus does not print one.

MSO Guess Paper, IGNOU Question Paper or Solved Paper: Choosing for MA Sociology

For one course code, such as MSO-004, a guess paper is a publisher’s revision set: the questions that have recurred or matter most in IGNOU’s past papers and the syllabus, each with a model answer; the same thing is sold as important questions, expected questions or a model paper. A previous year question paper is the actual paper IGNOU set in an earlier term-end examination, such as the December 2025 MSO-004 paper, and IGNOU publishes it free. A solved question paper takes one such IGNOU paper and adds a publisher’s answer beneath every question.

For a first-year learner on the new codes, the order matters more than usual. There is no MSO-101 paper to practise, so the nearest IGNOU material is the legacy MSO-001 paper, which covers the same thinkers, followed by the January 2026 MSO-101 assignment, then a guess paper for what the legacy papers kept asking. MASO and Legacy MSO Codes, Titles and Paper Layout

MASO learners sitting December 2026 hold either the new semester codes (MSO-101 onwards) or the legacy year codes (MSO-001 onwards), and the date sheet examines both. Section 3.20 of the July 2026 Common Prospectus describes MASO as an NEP-aligned programme of four semesters of 20 credits each, 80 credits in all, taught in English and Hindi. The prospectus prints the codes with a space (MSO 101); IGNOU’s MASO programme page prints them with a hyphen and gives the same titles.

Year Two Codes With No December Paper

Semesters III and IV each add one 4-credit open elective from another discipline; with it, each semester reaches 20 credits.

Semester III takes any two of MSOE-113 to MSOE-115 plus one open elective (MPSE-004, MPSE-007 or MJM-024); Semester IV takes MSOE-118 and MSOE-119 in their either-or forms plus one open elective (MGSE-1, MGSE-7, MGSE-10, MED-002 or MED-008). None of these second-year MASO codes is on the December 2026 sheet, which fits a programme whose first batch was admitted in January 2026. Legacy MSO and MSOE Codes Still Examined

The legacy codes no longer appear in the MASO table of the July 2026 prospectus, yet IGNOU still issues their assignments for the July 2026 and January 2027 sessions and lists all eight MSO and MSOE papers in its June 2026 question-paper list. MSO-002 is shared with the MA in Public Administration, where the same course is an option, and is also covered on the MPA handwritten assignment page.

Paper Layout of the Reviewed MSO Codes

The June 2025 MSO-001 paper is 3 hours and 100 marks, with ten questions in two sections, five to be answered, at least two from each section, each worth 20 marks in about 500 words. MSO-002, MSO-004 and MSOE-001 use the same frame and differ only in section labels and short notes.

Three hours, five answers, in minutes. Allow 10 minutes to read both sections and choose, and 170 minutes remain: 34 minutes for each 20-mark answer, or two halves of 17 minutes for a 10+10 short-note question. Fix the section split before writing: the rule asks for at least two answers from each side.

What Seventeen MSO Papers Asked Again, 2022 to 2025

MSO-004 set a caste question and a social-movements question in all six papers from June 2022 to December 2025, and the Green Revolution question of June 2023, Q4, was printed again word for word as Q4 in December 2025. MSO-001 returned to social structure, civil society, ethnicity, stratification and power in five of six papers; MSO-002 came back to online and ICT-based research in four of five.

MSO-004: Caste and Social Movements in Every Paper

The repeats in MSO-004 are sometimes exact. Besides the Green Revolution question, “the impact of urbanisation on Indian society” appeared as Q9 in June 2023 and again as Q9 in December 2025, with only the opening verb changed. Themes seen once are kept in a set and marked as seen once: research trends of the 1970s (June 2022), Gandhi and Nehru on industrialisation (June 2025) and India as a post-industrial society (December 2025). The June 2025 Q1 on India’s heritage of social thought sits close to the emergence theme but is not counted with it. MSO-103 and MSO-104, Sociology in India I and II, take over this ground in the new structure.

MSO-001: Structure, Ethnicity and Civil Society

Three MSO-001 patterns are worth knowing before a first MSO-101 sitting. Question 1 was about Marx in four of six papers: dehumanization of labour in December 2022, objectification of labour in June 2023, surplus value in June 2025. The line “social structure refers to relations between groups” was set in December 2022 and again in June 2023. Power in local communities, through Delbert Miller and Robert Dahl, came up in December 2022, December 2023 and June 2024. The link to the new course is visible in IGNOU’s own assignments: the 2026-27 MSO-101 assignment asks for “the role of concept and theory in sociological analysis” and for Schumpeter on entrepreneurship, both of which the 2025-26 MSO-001 assignment also asked.

MSO-002: Fieldwork Methods and the 2024 Statistics Block

In June 2024 the MSO-002 paper broke from the other four MSO-002 papers compared: four of its Section II questions were on data, namely mean, mode and median (Q7), correlation (Q8), presenting findings with ICT (Q9) and SPSS (Q10). No other MSO-002 paper compared asked this, so the block counts as seen once. It matters for the new structure because IGNOU has given that ground its own 4-credit course, MSO-109 Analysis and Presentation of Data, on 15 December 2026.

Short Notes Left MSO-001 and MSO-004 After 2022

MSO-001 and MSO-004 stopped setting short notes after 2022, while MSO-002 still sets them in some sessions. MSO-001 closed with a 10+10 short-note question in June 2022 and December 2022, then set ten full 20-mark questions in each paper from June 2023 to June 2025. MSO-004 split two questions into 10+10 parts in June 2022 and none in the five papers from June 2023 to December 2025. MSO-002 set “any two” of three short notes in June 2023 and June 2025, and none in June 2022, December 2023 or June 2024. The elective MSOE-001 set short notes in December 2025. A set that trains 250-word notes for MSO-004 is training for a paper IGNOU has not set since 2022.

Counting Method and Paper Sources

The counts come from seventeen IGNOU question papers: six MSO-001 papers from June 2022 to June 2025, five MSO-002 papers from June 2022 to June 2025, and six MSO-004 papers from June 2022 to December 2025, each compared question by question by ignouproject.com on 29 and 30 September 2026. Matching is by topic, not identical wording, and is a human judgement: “Discuss the emergence of sociology in India” and “Discuss the socio-economic context for the emergence of Sociology in India” count as one theme. If one paper touches a theme twice, as MSO-004 did with religion in December 2023, it still scores one. The theme tables cover MSO-001, MSO-002 and MSO-004; IGNOU’s list for June 2026 also carries these codes, and those papers join the tables at the next review.

From Your MSO Code to a Finished Revision Set

1. Structure settled first. An MSO-1 code is matched to IGNOU’s MASO programme page, an MSO-0 code to the legacy assignment file, and both to the 21 September 2026 sheet.
2. Layout taken from IGNOU. Ten questions, two sections, five answered, 20 marks, about 500 words, plus the short-note rule last printed for that code.
3. Themes ranked by what returned. For a new code, the legacy papers covering the same ground are ranked; a theme seen once stays in and is marked as seen once.
4. Answers written to IGNOU’s length. About 500 words for a full question, about 250 for each half of a short note.
5. Medium fixed last. The set is written in English or Hindi, whichever you sit, after you confirm it on WhatsApp.

December 2025 Q2 asked candidates to distinguish the book-view and the field-view of caste, and December 2023 Q3 asked the same contrast. About 500 words gives room for five moves: what the book-view is and where it comes from (textual, Indological); what the field-view is (ethnographic, village studies); one named scholar for each side from the blocks; one Indian example where the two views disagree; and a closing line on why sociology in India needed both.

It puts the six-of-six MSO-004 themes ahead of the two-of-six ones when time is short, and it rehearses the 500-word answer the MSO papers reward. For a legacy learner facing three elective mornings in a row, it decides what to revise on the evening before each.

What It Cannot Do for a First MSO-101 Sitting

It cannot know how IGNOU will shape the first MSO-101 to MSOE-110 papers. They are 4-credit courses; whether IGNOU keeps the three-hour, 100-mark frame of the 8-credit legacy papers is not stated in the prospectus, and no MSO-101 paper exists to check. It does not replace the new course blocks, and a theme found in six of six legacy papers can still be absent in December.

Downloading IGNOU’s MSO Papers and the December Sheet

IGNOU posts every MSO paper free on ignou.ac.in, one list per session, and the IGNOU question paper list for June 2026 already carries MSO-001 to MSO-004 and MSOE-001 to MSOE-004. It carries no MSO-101 series file.

1. On ignou.ac.in, open Student Services, then Downloads, then Question Papers, and pick the session.
2. Search by course number, because the same course is filed as MSO-1, MSO-001 or MSO001 in different places.
3. Check the session printed on page 1; some files sit in folders with no session in the name.
4. Hindi-medium learners should keep scrolling, because IGNOU prints the Hindi paper after the English one in a single PDF.
5. For dates, open the newest date sheet PDF and read the date in its first line, 21 September 2026 on the version this guide uses.

Before and After the MASO Exams: Hall Ticket to Grade Card

A new-structure learner needs the hall ticket in hand before 26 November, weeks earlier than a legacy learner whose papers start in December or January. The MSO-101 assignment for the January 2026 batch was due on 30 September 2026, so assignment questions often arrive in the same message as the guess paper. Hindi or English, and Which Session a MASO Set Targets

MASO is taught in English and Hindi, according to section 3.20 of the July 2026 Common Prospectus, and every legacy MSO paper compared prints the English paper followed by the Hindi version in one file, from December 2022 to December 2025.

Each set is prepared for the upcoming term-end examination, in every medium IGNOU examines that course in, and the medium for your course code is confirmed on WhatsApp before you pay.

Every MASO set sold until the next date sheet targets December 2026. When IGNOU issues its tentative June 2027 sheet, this guide is revised, and the first MSO-101 series papers join the tables once IGNOU publishes them.

2. Each code is checked against the 21 September 2026 sheet and IGNOU’s latest paper or notice, and the total is quoted.
