Quick answer. IGNOU MASO books are the MA Sociology blocks IGNOU prints for its 29 MASO course codes, and every one is free to read on eGyanKosh. IGNOU posts the printed blocks after admission unless a learner chose digital material, and the programme runs in English and Hindi medium. The July 2026 Common Prospectus gives MASO 80 credits across four semesters: 29 codes of 4 credits each, of which a learner studies 20, 14 of them fixed and 6 chosen as electives. A complete course book is prepared for every code in both media, at ₹249 per book as a hard copy or ₹99 per book as a soft copy, with one fixed ₹100 delivery charge on a hard-copy order, and every order is placed on WhatsApp at +91 93546 37830.

Ten MASO Papers Between 26 November and 17 December

The first MASO paper is MSO-101 on Thursday 26 November 2026, and the tenth, MSOE-110, falls on Thursday 17 December 2026, according to IGNOU’s tentative date sheet dated 21 September 2026. Both semesters of Year 1 sit in that one session.

Semester 1 and Semester 2 papers are examined together in the December 2026 term-end examination (TEE).

Revised MASO, Year 1. MSO-101 on 26 November, MSO-102 on 28 November, MSO-103 on 1 December, MSO-104 on 3 December, MSOE-105 on 5 December, MSO-106 on 8 December, MSO-107 on 10 December, MSO-108 on 12 December, MSO-109 on 15 December and MSOE-110 on 17 December 2026.

Earlier MSO structure. MSOE-001 on 7 December, MSOE-002 on 8 December, MSOE-003 on 9 December and MSOE-004 on 18 December 2026, then MSO-001 on 5 January, MSO-002 on 7 January, MSO-003 on 9 January and MSO-004 on 12 January 2027.

The pattern is one MASO paper roughly every second day, and IGNOU’s sheet sets no paper this session for MSO-111 to MSO-117 or MSOE-113 to MSOE-119, the Year 2 codes. The batch sitting these papers is the January 2026 intake: IGNOU’s MSO-101 assignment booklet for 2026-27 names 30 September 2026 as that batch’s submission date and 31 March 2027 for the July 2026 batch. Any code can be looked up on the December 2026 date sheet by course code, and the hall ticket download steps matter in the week before 26 November. A tentative sheet can be revised, so recheck each date against IGNOU’s latest version before fixing a plan.

1,200 Hours of Reading Before MSO-101

MASO Year 1 carries 1,200 hours of official study, because its ten courses are worth 4 credits each and IGNOU converts every credit into 30 hours. IGNOU’s Common Prospectus for July 2026 counts one credit as 30 hours of learner study, so a 4-credit course carries 120 hours and a 6-credit course 180 hours. Counted from 30 September 2026, 57 days remain before MSO-101, and one reading of all ten courses would need about 21 hours a day.

The revision changed the shape of the load more than its size, and the two structures side by side show why the book list grew:

Before January 2026: MSO

Year 1 held four compulsory courses, MSO-001 to MSO-004, of 8 credits each. That is 32 credits and 960 hours, spread over four papers that this December session places between 5 and 12 January 2027. Four codes meant four books.

From January 2026: MASO

Year 1 holds ten courses, MSO-101 to MSOE-110, of 4 credits each. That is 40 credits and 1,200 hours, examined in 22 days between 26 November and 17 December 2026. Ten codes mean ten books, and each book is half the length of the syllabus an 8-credit MSO course carried.

IGNOU issues printed study material either as a single book of blocks and units or as separate blocks for every course, on an average one block per credit, and a block usually comprises 3 to 5 units. For a 4-credit MASO course that average points to about four blocks, which is why the MASO day-count calculator below works in hours rather than in block counts.

SLM First, Revision Guide Second, eGyanKosh Files Always

IGNOU’s own MSO and MSOE blocks come first, because IGNOU sets every MASO term-end paper from its self-learning material. Self-learning material (SLM) is IGNOU’s course text, issued in blocks that usually hold 3 to 5 units, posted to each learner who did not choose digital material and open to anyone on eGyanKosh. eGyanKosh, at egyankosh.ac.in, is IGNOU’s free digital repository of self-learning material.

A help book, sold under names such as guide book or study guide, is an independent publisher’s revision volume that condenses one course code, such as MSO-101, for the term-end examination; it is not an IGNOU publication, and IGNOU does not examine from it. A free PDF counts as legitimate only if IGNOU itself published it, on egyankosh.ac.in or inside the IGNOU e-Content app. Searches for an IGNOU MA Sociology books pdf free download therefore end, legitimately, in one place: IGNOU’s own repository.

The comparison has four columns; slide it left on a phone.

For every official file listed course by course, the IGNOU books download guide to official PDF sources is the place to start. What a revision volume adds is explained on the page about IGNOU help books, printed and online guide books are compared separately, and shorter topic summaries are described under IGNOU study notes. Official study material is linked here only at egyankosh.ac.in, and this page does not host or redistribute IGNOU’s files. Files posted elsewhere as combined MASO PDFs cannot be checked for edition or completeness, which is the reason no such file is linked.

Before buying a help book from any publisher, a MASO learner can test it on five points. The cover codes should read MSO-101 style for the revised programme or MSO-001 style for the earlier one, never MASO-101, which is another university’s code. The medium should match the admission record. The edition should postdate the January 2026 revision it claims to follow. For MSO-101 to MSOE-110, ask which solved papers are inside, since IGNOU’s question paper archive is digitised up to the December 2025 session and these codes entered the syllabus in January 2026. Any promise about marks or about which questions will appear is a reason to walk away.

One book, one code. MSO-101 and MSO-102 share a title stem, Sociological Concepts and Theories, yet each has its own book because each has its own paper.

Chapters per course. The chapters follow one code’s syllabus and are written for the stretch after the blocks have been read once.

Latest solved papers. Where IGNOU has set papers for a code, the latest ones are solved; for the Year 1 MASO codes, the papers included are confirmed on WhatsApp before payment.

Important questions and answers. Written code by code for the final reading before a paper.

India in two papers. MSO-103 and MSO-104 split Sociology in India into two papers only two days apart, on 1 and 3 December, so both books are needed in the same fortnight.

A research trio. MSO-107, MSO-108 and MSO-109 cover foundations, methods and data, three books whose papers sit on 10, 12 and 15 December.

Two urban electives that are not a choice. MSOE-105 and MSOE-110 are the only electives printed for Semesters 1 and 2, so every Year 1 learner needs both.

Year 2 by choice. Semesters 3 and 4 each ask for two electives and one open elective, so only the codes you register are ordered.

Borrowed codes. MAN-105 and MAN-107 come from anthropology, MGSE codes from gender studies and MED codes from sustainable development; each still has its own book.

Either medium. Each code is prepared in English and in Hindi, the two media IGNOU lists for MASO.

Earlier MSO codes too. Learners finishing MSO-001 to MSO-004 or MSOE-001 to MSOE-004 order those books the same way.

A code check first. A code that is not on your IGNOU record is flagged on WhatsApp before any payment.

IGNOU’s MASO table has 29 course codes, all worth 4 credits and 120 study hours, and each code has its own complete course book in English and Hindi. Section 3.20 of the July 2026 Common Prospectus prints them across four semesters of 20 credits each, which reconciles to the 80 credits of the degree.

Each course book costs ₹249 as a hard copy and ₹99 as a soft copy (PDF), and a learner orders only the course codes needed. A hard-copy order carries one fixed delivery charge of ₹100, however many books it contains.

Eight disagreements in the MASO documents, two of them on this site

Semester or year. Section 3.20 of the July 2026 Common Prospectus lays MASO out in four semesters, while the prospectus summary list gives it a year-wise mode of examination, IGNOU’s programme page labels every course Year 1 or Year 2, and the December 2026 date sheet examines Semester 1 and Semester 2 together.

A spelling. MSO-116 and MSO-117 are printed as Sociology of Eduation in both the prospectus and on ignou.ac.in. Copy the code, not the title, onto forms.

MED or MDE. The prospectus prints the open electives as MED 002 and MED 008, the ignou.ac.in MASO page prints MDE-002 and MDE-008, and eGyanKosh files the material as MED-002 and MED-008. The prospectus also writes MGSE 1, MGSE 7 and MGSE 10 where the programme page writes MGSE-001, MGSE-007 and MGSE-010.

A block cover. The MSO-103 Block-1 file on eGyanKosh is titled Sociology of India-I, while the prospectus names the course Sociology in India-I.

The course code field. IGNOU’s 2026 MASO assignment booklets print MASO in the Course Code line and the real code, such as MSO-101, only in the assignment code.

Two status links. The prospectus lists https://www.ignou.ac.in/pages/179#StudyMaterialStatus for dispatch status, while the footer of ignou.ac.in points to a different page number for Study Material Status.

Look-alike codes elsewhere. Odisha State Open University also calls its MA Sociology MASO and uses MSO-101 to MSO-104, Uttarakhand Open University prints papers coded MASO-101, and Tezpur University uses MSO 101 and MSO 103. None of that material is IGNOU’s.

This site’s own pages. The site’s 2019 MA Sociology overview shows only the earlier 64-credit MSO table, with MSO 2 titled Research Methods and Methodologies where IGNOU prints Research Methodologies and Methods, and the guess paper hub lists only MSO-01 to MSOE-4. Both are being brought in line with this page.

Year 1 Fixed, Year 2 Chosen: The Four MASO Sets

A MASO learner needs ten books in Year 1 and ten in Year 2, and only the Year 2 set depends on elective choices. The ten Year 1 books come to ₹2,590 in hard copy, with the single ₹100 delivery charge, or ₹990 in soft copy.

Semester 1: Theory, Indian Sociology and the City

Semester 1 holds MSO-101 Sociological Concepts and Theories-I (26 November), MSO-102 Sociological Concepts and Theories-II (28 November), MSO-103 Sociology in India-I (1 December), MSO-104 Sociology in India-II (3 December) and MSOE-105 Introduction to Urban Sociology (5 December). All five as hard copies cost 5 × ₹249 + ₹100 = ₹1,345; as soft copies, 5 × ₹99 = ₹495.

The complete course book covers one course code with its chapters, the latest previous years’ solved papers and the important questions and answers; the semester-wise Last Minute Exam Guide covers a whole semester at ₹249 with the important questions and answers only. This site has no MASO semester guide page, so the complete course book is the only MASO book priced here.

Semester 2: The Village, Research Design and Data

Semester 2 holds MSO-106 Rural Sociology (8 December), MSO-107 Foundations of Social Science Research (10 December), MSO-108 Research Methods (12 December), MSO-109 Analysis and Presentation of Data (15 December) and MSOE-110 Urbanisation and Urban Development (17 December). The prospectus allows an exit after these 40 credits with a Post Graduate Diploma in Research Methodology, which is why three of the five courses are research courses.

Semester 3: Two Cores, Two of Three Electives, One Open Choice

Semester 3 fixes MSO-111 Sociology of Development and MSO-112 Development and Global Society. The learner then takes two of MSOE-113 Sociology of Religion, MSOE-114 Sociology of Diaspora and MSOE-115 Globalisation and Transnational Communities, and one open elective from MPSE-004 Social and Political Thought in Modern India, MPSE-007 Social Movements and Politics in India or MJM-024 Media and Society. That is five books out of eight possible codes.

Semester 4: Education, Two Paired Electives, One Open Choice

Semester 4 fixes MSO-116 and MSO-117, Sociology of Education I and II. Two electives come from pairs: MSOE-118 Sociology of Food or MAN-107 Environmental Anthropology, and MSOE-119 Sociology of Health or MAN-105 Tribes in India. The open elective is one of MGSE-001, MGSE-007, MGSE-010, MED-002 or MED-008. Again five books; the full Year 2 set of ten costs ₹2,590 in hard copy or ₹990 in soft copy, and IGNOU’s December 2026 sheet sets no paper yet for the Year 2 MSO and MSOE codes.

If Your Record Still Shows MSO-001 to MSO-004

A learner on the earlier structure orders by the old codes: four Year 1 books, MSO-001 to MSO-004, cost 4 × ₹249 + ₹100 = ₹1,096 in hard copy or ₹396 in soft copy. The same arithmetic applies to four earlier Year 2 electives. Old-code books are never sent against a MASO record, and MASO books are never sent against an MSO record.

Parcel Late, Missing or Never Sent: MPDD Routes

IGNOU’s printed MASO blocks are tracked on the official status page, and blocks that never arrive are taken up with the Material Production and Distribution Division (MPDD) at Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068. The dispatch status of printed material is checked on the official study material status page linked from ignou.ac.in. Non-receipt of printed study material is taken up with the Registrar, Material Production and Distribution Division (MPDD), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, at mpdd@ignou.ac.in.

Other pages circulate other status addresses and a delivery period for IGNOU’s parcels. The prospectus lists one status route, and IGNOU states no delivery period, so none is given here.

Look-Alike Codes, Two Generations, Two Media: Six Checks

The right MASO book is the one whose code, university and medium match your IGNOU admission record, and six checks settle it. The complete course book is prepared in each medium IGNOU offers for the programme, and your medium is confirmed with your course codes on WhatsApp. IGNOU lists English and Hindi for MASO in the summary list of programmes of the July 2026 Common Prospectus.

  1. Number range. MSO-101 to MSO-117 and MSOE-105 to MSOE-119 are revised MASO codes; MSO-001 to MSO-004 and MSOE-001 to MSOE-004 belong to the earlier 8-credit structure. The two look alike on a cover.
  2. University. A paper or book headed MASO-101, or an MSO-101 printed by another open university, is not IGNOU material even when the title sounds right.
  3. Medium. English or Hindi follows the medium chosen at admission, and the book follows the same medium.
  4. Year 2 codes. Semester 3 and 4 codes come from your re-registration choices, made through IGNOU’s re-registration form; order those books only after the choices show on your record.
  5. Open-elective spellings. MED-002 may appear as MDE-002, and MGSE-001 as MGSE 1; they are the same courses.
  6. Edition. Anything printed before January 2026 cannot reflect the MASO revision.

The site’s older overview of the MSO programme still describes the earlier structure and is useful only to learners admitted before January 2026.

Phone Now, Print Later: Splitting a MASO Order

A MASO learner with papers from 26 November is usually better served by soft copies for the earliest papers and hard copies only where there is time to annotate. The soft copy costs ₹99 per book with no delivery charge; the hard copy costs ₹249 per book, with one ₹100 delivery charge for the whole order.

Soft copy, ₹99 per book

Arrives as a PDF on WhatsApp once the order is confirmed. All ten Year 1 books come to 10 × ₹99 = ₹990.

Hard copy, ₹249 per book plus ₹100 per order

Printed and dispatched by courier the day after the order. All ten Year 1 books in hard copy come to 10 × ₹249 + ₹100 = ₹2,590.

A worked example shows how a split order behaves. A learner who wants Semester 1 fast and Semester 2 on paper takes five soft copies, MSO-101 to MSOE-105, for ₹495, and five hard copies, MSO-106 to MSOE-110, for 5 × ₹249 + ₹100 = ₹1,345. The order totals ₹1,840, the ₹100 applies once, and the Semester 2 papers from 8 December leave the printed books time to travel. Both formats can go in one WhatsApp message.

Assignments, Grades and Past MSO Exams

The neighbouring MASO questions each have their own page, and one sentence per page says which. Assignments carry 30 per cent of the final course result and the term-end examination carries the remaining 70 per cent, and IGNOU’s 2026 MASO booklets print that 30 per cent weightage on every TMA. Marks for MSO assignments appear on the assignment result and status checker. Model answers course by course are among the solved assignment files. Handwritten sets for MSO and MSOE codes are covered on the MASO handwritten assignment page, and the general rules sit in the step-by-step handwritten assignment guide. Topic lists before a paper are on the guess paper hub. IGNOU’s own previous question paper archive is digitised up to the December 2025 session, and answered versions sit on the solved question papers page and the last year paper collection. After results, the IGNOU percentage calculator and the CGPA converter turn grades into figures.

Project and Synopsis Requests Go Elsewhere

MASO has no project course in the July 2026 table, so project and synopsis questions belong to other programmes and are answered at the IGNOU project reports section and the synopsis and proposal formats page. A request for books across two programmes, such as MASO with MAPS electives, is handled like any other order: send every code on WhatsApp and each one is priced per book.

From Code List to Courier in Four Steps

Every book order is placed on WhatsApp at +91 93546 37830. The order takes four steps:

  1. Type the MSO, MSOE or open-elective codes exactly as your IGNOU record prints them, add English or Hindi, and say soft copy or hard copy.
  2. Your course codes are checked free before any payment, so a book that does not match your registration is not sold to you.
  3. Pay the confirmed total: ₹99 for each soft copy, or ₹249 for each hard copy plus one ₹100 delivery charge for the order.
  4. The soft copy is sent on WhatsApp after the order is confirmed. The hard copy is dispatched by courier the next day, and the courier details with the tracking ID are sent to you on WhatsApp. No delivery date is promised on this page.

Charges for assignments, projects and other services are listed on the site’s price list for other services, and Shri Chakradhar Publication’s books page introduces the publisher.

Where Each MASO Fact Comes From

Four kinds of source were used and kept apart, and each is named with its date.

The Common Prospectus. Codes, titles, credits, the semester layout, the exit diploma and the English and Hindi medium come from section 3.20 and the summary list of programmes of the July 2026 Common Prospectus, together with sections 1.9, 1.11, 1.20, 1.21, 14.13 and 14.14 and the student service contact table, read on 30 September 2026. Other editions are listed on the IGNOU prospectus page. Paper dates come from IGNOU’s tentative December 2026 date sheet of 21 September 2026, the course list from IGNOU’s MASO programme page, and the submission dates and weightage from the MSO-101 assignment booklet for 2026-27.

eGyanKosh. Collection names and handles for MSO-103 Block-1, the earlier MSO Year 1 community and the MPS Year 2 collection holding MPSE-004, MPSE-007, MED-002 and MED-008 were taken from eGyanKosh on 30 September 2026.

Semester pages. No MASO semester guide page has been published on this site, so nothing here counts the contents of a semester guide.

The publisher’s terms. Prices, the delivery charge, next-day dispatch and the WhatsApp route are Shri Chakradhar Publication’s own commercial terms.
